I know what you're all thinking. And yes, I'm a total freaking nerd. Moving on now...

So, I went and saw AVENGERS: ENDGAME with the bonus content at the Cinemark Century Theater in Oakridge Mall today after work, and it was totally worth it. Not so much for the bonus content, but for the film itself. This was going to be the very last time I would be able to see the movie on the big screen. And that's the main reason why I went to see it again.

As for the bonus content, they were OK. The big one for me was the lovely tribute to the Man himself, Stan Lee. I still find it hard to believe that he's really gone. It doesn't feel like it, since we, the fans, still talk about him. Then there was a cut scene featuring the Hulk, but it wasn't completely rendered. The last bonus was featured the opening scene of SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME, which I just saw earlier this week. But as I stated earlier, I just wanted to see the film on the big screen one last time, and it was so worth it!!

AVENGERS: ENDGAME (WITH BONUS CONTENT) is currently playing in theaters nationwide, including the Cinemark Century Theaters here in the Bay Area. To view showtimes, visit their website at http://cinemark.com.

Phil attends the CRUEL INTENTIONS 20th ANNIVERSARY screening at the Cinemark Century Oakridge 20 - March 26, 2019

Cinematography by Theo van de Sande

Re-released by Sony Pictures

The year was 1999. Things were different back then. For example, my rent was only $400 a month! Gas was $1.25, Bill Clinton was President, the economy was doing great, and there was no internet! Teenagers used to go the mall to hang out with there friends. Yup, life sure was different; a lot simpler now that I stop and think about it. It was here where I saw a movie that is now celebrating its 20th anniversary! And yes, that makes me feel old! Now, thanks to Sony Pictures, they are bringing back the teen cult classic CRUEL INTENTIONS for a one week engagement, and, of course, I went and saw it over at the Cinemark Century Oakridge 20, where I saw it originally all those years ago.

The film's official synopsis: Annette (Reese Witherspoon) unwittingly becomes a pawn in Sebastian's (Ryan Phillippe) and Kathryn's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) deliciously diabolical wager of sexual conquest when she writes an article in Seventeen Magazine about how she intends to stay pure until she marries her boyfriend. However, Sebastian gets more than he bargained for as he attempts to woo Annette into his bed.

is playing for one week only at select theaters, including the Cinemark Century 20 Oakridge here in the Bay Area. To view showtimes, visit cinemark.com.

Phil's Halloween Horror Watch: Phil sees the 40th Anniversary Screening of John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN at the Cinemark Century Oakridge 20 - October 10, 2018

Welcome to Day Ten of my Halloween Horror Watch! In 1978, writer/director John Carpenter and co-screenwriter Debra Hill unleashed one of the most terrifying horror films ever to theaters. Their $250,000 film would end up grossing more than $70 million worldwide, making it one of the most profitable indie films of all time. The movie became so popular, it ushered in the Slasher genre of the 1980's, garnered a legion of fans, and spawned a successful film franchise that includes seven sequels, and remake and sequel, with a new installment set to be released in a couple of weeks! And to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film's release, CineLife Entertainment is teaming up with Carpenter to bring HALLOWEEN back to theaters this October!

The film's official synopsis: On a cold Halloween night in 1963, six-year-old Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister, Judith. He was sentenced and locked away for fifteen years. But on October 30, 1978, while being transferred for a court date, a 21-year-old Michael Myers steals a car and escapes Smith’s Grove. He returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for his next victims.

This is one of my all-time favorite horror films ever. The movie helped establish the "rules" for the slasher genre that would come charging in with the release of FRIDAY THE 13th just two years later. The film launched Jamie Lee Curtis' film career, and Carpenter became a legendary director within the horror genre.

The film has been discussed, written, dissected, reassembled, and worshiped since its release on October 25, 1978. There is nothing I can say about the film that hasn't already been said. The film can be classified as a "perfect" film. With Carpenter's beautiful directing, Curtis' down to earth performance, and thanks to Carpenter's simplistic soundtrack, there isn't one flaw to be found within the movie. If by chance you have never seen the film, you really need to see it! In fact, it is against the law to live your life without seeing this movie!

The movie has been released in various formats over the years. It was originally released on VHS by Media Entertainment, then by Anchor Bay Entertainment in a variety of ways and formats, including special edition VHS boxsets, DVD, and Blu-Ray. Just recently,  Lionsgate Home Entertainment released the movie in a Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray edition for the film's 40th anniversary.

HALLOWEEN is one of the greatest horror films of all time! Period! There is no discussion, no debate, and no questioning about it's place in not only horror film history, but in cinema history! The landscape of the horror genre wouldn't look the same without this film! It is required viewing, no matter what time it is within the calendar year! And with it available to watch on Blu-Ray, DVD, local television stations, VOD and various streaming platforms, there is no reason as to why you haven't watched it yet. This October, make a date with Michael Myers, and don't forget to hide your knives. 5 out of 5 stars!! Highly recommended!!

HALLOWEEN is playing in select theaters nationwide this October, courtesy of CineLife Entertainment. To see if it's playing in a town and theater near you, please visit their website at www.cinelifeentertainment.com.

Phil sees COCO at the Cinemak Century Oakridge 20 - February 1, 2018

Pixar Animation Studio is one of the finest animation studios of all time! With films like TOY STORY, CARS, WALL-E, FINDING NEMO and UP, the studio has released some of the most awarding winning and critically acclaimed movies of all time, and in the shortest amount of time. Today, I went and saw their latest endeavour, and it marks as one of my new favorite movie from them. All I can saw is that COCO is destined to be one the studio's very best!!

The film's official synopsis: Despite his family's baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector, and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.

The film features the talented voices of Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Alanna Ubach, Edward James Olmos, Jaime Camil, Renée Victor, Gabriel Iglesias, and Cheech Marin for starters.

Being Hispanic American, I was completely moved on how much Pixar honored our heritage, our traditions, and how much family means to us. The norm is that Hollywood will fill theater screens with stereotypes and caricatures and they have relied on this for way too long. Finally, I saw a film that honored the Mexican community with intelligence, respect, and strong characters that we are emotionally invested in.

The movie was directed by Lee Unkrich, who's Pixar credits include co-directing TOY STORY 2, MONSTERS, INC., FINDING NEMO, and then directing TOY STORY 3 solo.  Joining him his his co-director Adrian Molina, whose writing credits include MONSTERS UNIVERSITY and THE GOOD DINOSAUR. Together, these two gentlemen have made one of Pixar's best films ever! The compositions and set-ups and excellent, the camera pans blend in with the film and they let the emotional scenes linger to accentuate the story. And let me tell you, this was such an emotional film!

Since this is a computer animation movie, I can't forget to mention it. The studio has come a long way since the release of TOY STORY. Holy cow!! The animation looks freaking amazing!! There is so much details in every single frame!! From the golden leaves to The Land of the Dead, it was a spectacular sight to behold!! An I thought the animation in CARS 3 was impressive!! The amount of detail is extraordinary!!

What I loved most about the movie is the story. It's a story based in Mexican traditions and folklore. All the characters are a representation of me, my family, and friends. For the first time, I felt proud seeing my people shown in a positive light, and at the heart of the story is family. Family comes first always, and everything else will fall into place.

COCO is one of the best family films of all time and Pixar's best to date!! You have never seen a film like this before!! And FYI, you will cry during the film, especially at the end! I cried. Twice. Maybe three time. Anyway, I loved this movie!! So take the family to your favorite theater and go see this movie!! 5 out of 5 stars!! Highly recommended!!

Phil sees STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI for the third time at the Cinemark Century 20 Oakridge Mall - December 27, 2017

Yup, I saw STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI for the third time today! This time, I took my old friend Dina to see the film. We've been friends for over 25 years, and she is a huge STAR WARS fan! She hadn't seen the movie yet, so I thought it would be fun to take her to the Cinemark Century in Oakridge Mall. We also saw it in their special XD theater with the soft, comfy chairs too! Yeah, it felt real nice to sit in those reclining leather chairs!

After the screening was over, I asked her what her thoughts and opinions on the film. She basically said the same thing as Stephanie did: it was awesome, action packed and the story was amazing!! Since this was a third time watching it, I was able to pick up things that I missed the previous two times. In my original review, I said that the film's story is a dark one; born out of annihilation and darkness and ends in hope and light. I was completely blown away by the film's script as it took me on a very different path that I thought I was going to travel on, based on how the last film ended. This is all true but somehow I totally missed the message in the movie: hope!

It was referenced all throughout the film. The main line, "We are the spark that will burn the First Order down." is about hope. The ending of the film offers us that hope will rise again throughout the galaxy. And that hope will bring the end to the First Order. It is a powerful message; one that reflects on what has happened in this country since Trump took over the White House and ushered in his reign of tyranny over America. But now there has risen a Resistance to this regime of white supremacy, corporate sell outs, misogyny, homophobia, climate change and this Resistance will not stop until those who will cause us harm has been removed from office. If you don't see this, then I'm sorry but you're not paying attention.

The day I saw it was also the one year anniversary of actress Carrie Fisher's passing. It's hard to believe that it's already been a year, yet watching the movie it felt like she was still here with us. The universe is still reeling from her untimely death, and fans from all over the world miss out beloved princess Lea.

Phil sees STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (again) at the Cinemark Century 20 Oakridge Mall - December 19, 2017

Well, I didn't wait long to see STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI again. This time I took my girlfriend Stephanie to see it at the Century 20 Theaters in Oakridge Mall, located here in South San Jose. So after seeing it on Monday after work, I told her all about it (spoiler free of course) and that I need to take her to see it. So we went the very next day and caught the 11:45am screening of the film.

Over two hours later, we exited the theater and I asked her what she thought of the film. All she could say was, "That was so awesome!" I sensed she was a little overwhelmed and was still trying to process the movie. Having seen it a second time, I caught more details that I missed the day before. As I said in my original review, Johnson has deliberately taken the franchise into uncharted territory. There is so much happening in the film that it requires multiple viewings, which I was planning to do anyway.

So as I am writing this, the film has now grossed $791.7 million worldwide! It had the 5th biggest worldwide opening of all time, the 2nd biggest worldwide IMAX opening of all time and the 2nd highest Thursday night gross ever (the first was THE FORCE AWAKENS). The film is estimated to gross over $800 million by the end of the year.

Phil attends the RiffTrax Live! Broadcast of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD at the Century 20 Oakridge Mall-October 25, 2013

Hello again everybody! So this past Thursday night, I headed on over to the Cinemark Century 20 Theaters in Oakridge mall in south San Jose to attended the RiffTrax Live! broadcast of the 1968 George A. Romero horror classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. To actually riff such a landmark film in the horror genre takes a lot of guts (pun intended), but remember these guys are professionals! If anybody could riff on the grandfather of zombie films, it would be the RiffTrax guys!

So if you don't know what a Rifftrax is, let me give you all a quick definition. According to their official website, Rifftrax "are comedic MP3 tracks that you play in-sync with your favorite movies. Written and performed by the stars of the award-winning TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000, RiffTrax brings the unique humor of "Satellite of Love" partners Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett to Hollywood's hit movies."

They guys broadcast the event from the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, Tennessee to hundreds of movie theaters across the country courtesy of the folks at Fathom Events. After some funny intros, they guys got down with doing what they do best!

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is one of the most revered and one of the most important horror films of the 20th Century. The movie is found in the Top Five most influential horror films and is considered the alpha and omega of the zombie genre. Directed by horror icon George Romero, the film spawned five sequels, numerous remakes, re-imagines, and parodies and homages.

Bill Corbett, Kevin Murphy, & Michael J. Nelson
Kevin, Bill, and Michael had no problem pointing out the faults of the film and riffing the hell outta them. It's funny, because of the film's legacy and how it's so beloved by horror fans, we fail to see some of the faults to be found within its frames. Luckily, the guys had the audience in stitches! Yes, the RiffTrax crew pulled no punches on the film, and had the us eating out of the palm of their hands! Making fun on a classic is by no means an easy task, but the guys managed to pull off the impossible, and made Halloween a little less scary in the process.

This was such an awesome RiffTrax Live! event! Now just in case you missed it, you're in luck! The gang will be back just in time for Christmas as the riff that awful holiday classic film SANTA CLAUS VS. THE MARTIANS! Tickets are now available for that event, which will take place on Thursday, December 5th at 7:30pm, so make that date on your calender!

Phil attends the Rifftrax Live! Broadcast of STARSHIP TROOPERS at the Century 20 Oakridge-August 15, 2013

Hello again everybody! So this past Thursday night, my sister Stephanie and I attended the live RiffTrax broadcast of STARSHIP TROOPERS, a true sci-fi cult classic from the 1990's! So the both of us couldn't wait to see this show!

So if you don't know what a Rifftrax is, let me give you all a quick definition. Rifftrax "are downloadable audio commentaries featuring comedians Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett heckling (or riffing) films in the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000, a TV show in which Nelson was the head writer, and later the host. The RiffTrax commentaries are sold online and delivered by digital download," according to the website Wikipedia. But all this is just a fancy way of saying, "it's funny as hell!" Now Nelson, Murphy, and Corbett do the occasional live shows from one venue that is broadcast to hundreds of theaters all across the country, courtesy of teaming up with NCM Fathom Events. The closest theater that was participating in the live broadcast was the Century 20 Theaters in Oakridge Mall. So all of us headed over there to catch this awesome cinematic event!

Bill Corbett, Kevin Murphy, & Michael J. Nelson
After making their introductions, the guys began riffing on the sci-fi classic STARSHIP TROOPERS (1997). The film stars Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico), Denise Richards (Carmen Ibanez), Dina Meyer (Dizzy Flores), Neil Patrick Harris (Carl Jenkins), Jake Busey (Ace Levy), and Michael Ironside (Jean Rasczak). The film's about the human race trying to survive from eradication from an invasion of giant, mutant insects. With the plot sounds like a AIP B-Movie flick from the 1950's, there's more going on here than meets the eye. Director Paul Verhoeven has helmed other classics such as ROBOCOP (1987), TOTAL RECALL (1990), and BASIC INSTINCT (1992), but with this film, Verhoeven satires on war, patriotism, propaganda, and perverted idealism of the Utopian American dream.

Of course, Mike, Bill, and Kevin made the impossible possible as they just tore through this Hollywood creation! With jokes like, "Ladies and gentlemen, the Beatles" when the gigantic bugs come walking on screen, to taking shots at Jake Busey's big teeth and Denise Richards as "the worst Bond Girl ever!"

This was an awesome RiffTrax event! Now just in case you missed it, there will be an encore screening of the event on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 7:30pm! To purchase RiffTrax downloads of audio commentaries, DVDs, and Blu-Rays, visit their website at www.rifftrax.com. To learn more about Mystery Science Theater 3000, visit their website at www.mst3k.com. To learn about upcoming Fathom Events coming to your town, visit their website at www.fathomevents.com.

Phil sees THE INTERNSHIP at the Century 20 Oakridge Mall-July 3, 2013

So besides horror films, comedies are another genre that I love t watch. However, I haven't seen too many good comedies as of late. With that in mind, I headed back out to the Century 20 Theater in Oakridge Mall to see the latest Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson starring comedy vehicle entitled THE INTERNSHIP.

The film's official synopsis: Billy (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Owen Wilson) are salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital world. Trying to prove they are not obsolete, they defy the odds by talking their way into a coveted internship at Google, along with a battalion of brilliant college students. But, gaining entrance to this utopia is only half the battle. Now they must compete with a group of the nation's most elite, tech-savvy geniuses to prove that necessity really is the mother of re-invention.

Believe it or not, I really enjoyed the film. First it was funny, which is very important (as the old saying goes, "Dying is easy. Comedy is hard."). If it's not funny, the film is dead in the water. Two, both Vince and Owen already have great on-screen chemistry and perfect comedic timing (they appeared together in the comedy classic WEDDING CRASHERS). It boasts a good script, courtesy of Mr. Vaughn and Jared Stern, and director Shawn Levy (NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM TRILOGY, DATE NIGHT, REAL STEEL) keeps the laughter and the romance coming at a steady pace.

And speaking of romance, the lovely Rose Byrne plays Dana, the fire that makes Wilson's character Nick go weak in the knees. Byrne has been working nonstop! Since 2010, she has appeared (in chronological order) GET HIM TO THE GREEK, INSIDIOUS, BRIDESMAIDS, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, and I GIVE IT A YEAR!! *whew* This is one busy working class actress!! And not only is she a talented actress, and not only is she great in this film, but the woman is just drop dead gorgeous! Men, this woman is a triple threat! Watch out! She will break your heart!!

It was really cool that the movie was shot on location here in the Bay Area. The film mostly takes place at the Google building (located in Mountain View), but there were scenes that took place in San Francisco as well! It was awesome to see locations that I recognized and I found myself saying, "Hey! I know where they shot that scene! I've been there!" By doing this, it gives the film that real world feel, and for those of us who live here in the North Bay, it feels really good our home turf up in a Hollywood film up and projected on the big screen!

While predictable and somewhat clichéd, THE INTERNSHIP is an insightful, romantic and funny little film that does what it was sets out to do: make people laugh and keep them entertained. Well I laughed and was very entertained from beginning to end. Here's a fun summer film to enjoy! 4 out of 5 stars!! Recommended!!

Phil sees WORLD WAR Z at the Century 20 Oakridge Mall-July 2, 2013

After three weeks of attending film festivals in San Francisco and in Niles, I finally got around to seeing a theatrical released movie! There are so many new releases that I a way behind, so I decided to see the most recent ones. Which brings me to last Tuesday night, when I went and saw the new film WORLD WAR Z.

Hollywood star Brad Pitt portrays Gerry Lane, a Former United Nations employee who quit his job to become a full time dad to his two daughter and a full time husband to his beautiful wife Karin (Mireille Enos). While sitting in heavy traffic to their kids to school, Gerry notices that something's amiss. Then he sees an explosion and soon, he sees them. He takes his family to an apartment building to hide until his former UN colleague Thierry Umutoni (Fana Mokoena), the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations rescues them. Once safe on a battleship carrier in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Gerry is brought back in to help figure out how this virus was caused and where it originated, which put his life in serious jeopardy.

The movie is based on the 2006 novel of the same name by author Max Brooks and it was produced by Pitt's Plan B Entertainment company. Director Marc Forster (MONSTER'S BALL, FINDING NEVERLAND, STRANGER THAN FICTION, QUANTUM OF SOLACE and MACHINE GUN PREACHER) does a great job of creating tension, extreme scares, and horror! He creates a fine balance between the horror of seeing an army of zombies and the times that are quite and introspective. We ponder if the human race will survive. I questioned that throughout the film, and that's thanks in large part to Brooks' terrific directing and pacing.

Now I thought I would never say this, but Brad Pitt was awesome in the film! He showed great depth in his character: he's funny when he needs to be but his look of fear is believable. He's intelligent to the point that we believe that he is that smart. Plus the man kicks ass in the film. This was a physical role for Mr. Pitt. He running a lot, he's chased by zombies, barely survives a plan crash, all the while trying to stop the plague and save humanity. Somebody give this man a medal!!

The film is released in 2D and RealD 3D. Now I was originally going to see the film in 3D, but unfortunately the screening was completely sold out, so I saw it in 2D. After watching it, I am dying to see it in 3D. So hopefully I will be seeing the film again very soon.

Overall WORLD WAR Z is this summer's zombie apocalyptic thrill ride to attend!! It's cool, it's scary, it feel real and it looks like it! For those of you out there who believe that the world will come to an end because of a zombie invasion, don't see this movie. It will freak you out even more than you already are. For everyone else, go see this movie! 5 out of 5 stars!! Highly recommended!!

WORLD WAR Z is currently playing in both 2D and RealD 3D in theaters nationwide, including the Century Theaters here in the Bay Area. To view showtimes, visit their website at http://cinemark.com.

Phil attends a special advanced screening of THE PURGE at the Century 20 Oakridge Mall-June 4, 2013

Every now and then I get passes for advance screening of films before they come out. This past Tuesday I was able to attend an advanced screening of the new film THE PURGE, which was held at the Century 20 in Oakridge Mall. After seeing the trailer for it for past couple of months, I was really looking forward to seeing the movie.

The film's synopsis: Set in the year 2022, in which the United States has become "a nation reborn", with crime and unemployment rates hitting an all-time low. To keep these rates low, the government has instated an annual 12-hour time period called "The Purge", during which people can vent their negative emotions because all crime (including murder) is legal and emergency services are suspended. During one of these free-for-alls, James Sandin (Ethan Hawke) and his family – wife Mary (Lena Headey), teenage daughter Zoey (Adelaide Kane) and younger son Charlie (Max Burkholder) – are tested to see how far they will go to protect themselves when they give refuge to a stranger seeking shelter, and their home is subsequently invaded by a ruthless gang of thugs.

Written and directed by James DeMonaco, the film is an interesting mix of horror, suspense, thriller, and social commentary. The threat of home invasion is true modern horror and it's something that we all fear. But if we're in our home during the invasion, it only makes it ten times more horrifying. How far are we wiling to go to protect our family? Are we willing to kill? To shed blood on our hands? These are some of the questions that are raised within the film.

The other social commentary I noticed was this: We as human beings get angry. If you are not allowed to show our anger, we repress it. But what happens if we can't express this anger for an entire year? How explosive will we become when we are allowed to show this anger? I know that I get angry every day because I work in sales. And if I have a bad day at work, look out! But here in the America of 2022, they are only allowed to get crazy for one night. But some see this annual Purge as a means to eradicate those that plague society's utopia, namely the homeless. So it begs the question: are we using the Purge Night to release out anger and frustration properly or are we using it as a excuse to make the country the way we see fit?

OK enough with the movie analysis! Let's talk about what I thought of the movie!

While Ethan Hawke does an extraordinary job of bring depth to his character James, and it was cool to see Lena Headey's Mary evolve over the duration of the film, I found it somewhat predictable. Maybe it's because I've seen so many horror films, and thrillers, and suspenseful flicks that at some point during the film, I called out what was going to happen next. And about 90% of it I was correct. But both Ethan and Lena have great on-screen chemistry and you believe that they are married. And look for out Australian actor Rhys Wakefield as the film's antagonist Henry! Truly a chilling performance that will give you nightmares! But like I said, I found it predictable. However, don't let this deturate you from seeing the film. If you want to see the film, then by all means go see it!

Overall THE PURGE is a good micro budget thriller that will have you think twice about buying an expensive alarm system. I wouldn't be surprised if people, after seeing the film, run out and by an house alarm. Just make sure it actually works! 3 out of 5 stars! Worth a look!

Phil sees THE HANGOVER PART III at the Century 20 Oakridge Mall-May 24, 2013

Well, it's over. The fat lady has sung. The final curtain call. Game over man. What am I trying to say, you may be asking? I'm talking about THE HANGOVER PART III, the final chapter chronicling the misadventures of the infamous wolfpack. However, I'm sorry to report that this was not a funny movie to end the series on.

The film's official synopsis: In the aftermath of the death of Alan's (Zach Galifianakis) father, the wolfpack decide to take him to get treated for his mental issues. But things start to go wrong on the way to the hospital as the wolfpack is assaulted and Doug (Justin Bartha) is kidnapped. Now Alan, Phil (Bradley Cooper), and Stu (Ed Helms) must find Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong) again in order to surrender him to the gangster named Marshall (John Goodman) who kidnapped Doug in order to save him.

The film tries to be funny but fails to become funny every step of the way. While we are taken to both Tijuana and back once again to Las Vegas, the laughs and sight gags are few and far between. Director Todd Philips (ROAD TRIP, OLD SCHOOL, and THE HANGOVER films) does a fine job of directing the film, capturing the beauty  of the scenic locations of Mexico and the bright lights of Sin City, but  in the end, the jokes fall flat. Fall flat on its ass. All the jokes sucked. Just making sure that what I'm saying is crystal clear.

This is a perfect example of what's wrong with Hollywood. When the first film came out in 2009, it was hailed has one of the funniest films of the 21st century. But when it made an enormous amount of money at the box office, the studio saw dollar signs and became greedy. It was a stupid idea to try and make a sequel in the first place because how do you top the first film? The comedy in THE HANGOVER was so over the top and so outrageous, the next film would look lame and pathetic in comparison. This was what happened with the PART II and we witness it again here with this film.

Also, here's something that I don't get. It's called THE HANGOVER PART III, but there is no hangover in the film. Granted, there's a bonus scene in the credits that takes place after a wedding and the whole gang wakes up and are all hungover. So there you go but that's it. It's also worth noting that the 4 minute bonus scene was funnier than the entire 90 minute movie. Yup, that's pathetic!

THE HANGOVER PART III is a waste of time and not even worth a look. It's not even worth renting, or streaming, or anything. In lament terms, the film sucked ass big time! 2 out of 5 stars, only because of the hilarious bonus scene.

Phil sees STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS in 2D and 3D at the Century 20 Oakridge Mall- May 17, 2013

In the year 2009, writer/director J.J. Abrams did the impossible. His re-imaging of STAR TREK was a huge summer blockbuster, injecting the stale franchise with a major shot of adrenaline for the 21st century audiences to enjoy. Now in 2013, Abrams releases the next chapter in the rebooted series. STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS expands on the characters we've all come to know and love while giving us one of the greatest villains of all time.

Here is the film's official synopsis: When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

What I enjoyed about the film was that we get to know more about the characters. Kirk (Chris Pine) is still a brash, impulsive, head strong young man who has so much potential, but thinks he's above rules and regulations. Since the film is supposed to take place before the original television series, we get to see what the crew of the Enterpise was like when they were still young and green. In the case of Kirk, the events that transpire in the film will no doubt shape him into becoming the great captain that he is destined to become.

However the big star of the film is Benedict Cumberbatch, who's Kahn is one of the greatest villains to ever grace the silver screen. Unlike the previous incarnation, this Kahn is far more intelligent, more cunning, and more vicious. His mind is like a steal trap. His plans are far more deadlier. His body is a lethal weapon. And this Kahn has no problem with killing someone with his bare hands. Not since Heath Ledger's Joker in THE DARK KNIGHT have we seen a villain so terrifying!

The entire cast from the first film are once again reunited for this successful sequel. All turn in great performances. But like all sequels, there are some new blood injected into the mix. Joining in on all the fun is actor Peter Weller, who's famous for the playing the lead in the 1987 film ROBOCOP. Here, Weller portrays Starfleet Admiral Alexander Marcus, who knows more about Kahn than he's letting Kirk on. Also appearing in the film is the beautiful Alicia Eve as science officer Dr. Carol Marcus, daughter of Admiral Marcus and potential love interest for Kirk. Both of these two make the film much more interesting as well as intense.

Overall STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS is on helluva sci-fi, hi-octane, roller coaster ride of a sequel! It's action packed, it's humorous, it's unpredectable, it's just a damn good movie! Don't believe me? I saw the film TWICE IN ONE DAY!! That's right people! I saw it in 2D, loved it, walked to the boxoffice and saw it again in 3D! BTW the 3D effects were spectacular! So if it's in 3D see it! If not, see it still!! 5 out of 5 stars!! Highly recommended!!

Phil sees ZERO DARK THIRTY at the Century 20 Oakridge-January 7, 2013

Today's review is about a film that has been billed as "the story of history's greatest manhunt for the world's most dangerous man." It has received wide critical acclaim and has already earned four Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film has also received a great deal of controversy for its "allegedly pro-torture stance and for allegedly obtaining improper access to classified materials." However, all this aside, director Kathryn Bigelow's latest film ZERO DARK THIRTY is one of the most astounding films to be released in 2013 thus far!!

The movie's official synopsis: Maya (Jessica Chastain) is a CIA operative whose first experience is in the interrogation of prisoners following the Al Qaeda attacks against the U.S. on the 11th September 2001. She is a reluctant participant in extreme duress applied to the detainees, but believes that the truth may only be obtained through such tactics. For several years, she is single-minded in her pursuit of leads to uncover the whereabouts of Al Qaeda's leader, Osama Bin Laden. Finally, in 2011, it appears that her work will pay off, and a U.S. Navy SEAL team is sent to kill or capture Bin Laden. But only Maya is confident Bin Laden is where she says he is.

First off, let me tell you something about the beginning of the film. Now what I am about to tell you isn't a spoiler or anything. In fact, consider this a warning. In the first hour of the film, there are several scenes that feature the brutality of torture. Now if this makes you at all squeamish, then you'd might want to skip this movie. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the film because of the allege pro-torture stance. This will divide the audience and as a result, some will say yes it does, others will disagree. Too be honest, I'm still on the fence about this topic myself.

However, controversy aside, Bigelow shows us once again just how talented she is as a director. While I thought it would hard to surpass her last film, the Academy Award winning film THE HURT LOCKER, she does the impossible and creates a stunning, tense, procedural drama that cannot be classified as an action thriller, a war film, or in this a war drama. Bigelow is one of the few directors that makes films for just sheer entertainment; her films go beyond the term genre and transcend into the realm of art. Like her previous film, Bigelow crafts this picture with precision, clarity, and structure with moments of humor to release the tensions that it builds.

Bigelow and her writer Mark Boal (a former journalist) were working on a screenplay that was about the Battle of Tora Bora, where bin Laden was once believed to be hiding. However, once the news broke the news broke that bin Laden had been killed, they immediately shelved that idea and started from scratch. Originally filmed as For God and Country, the title was changed to ZERO DARK THIRTY, which according to Bigelow means that, "it's a military term for 30 minutes after midnight, and it refers also to the darkness and secrecy that cloaked the entire decade-long mission."

Actress Jessica Chastain did a fabulous job at portraying our main protagonist Maya. Head strong, confident, and resilient in her pursuit in locating the whereabouts of our antagonist Osama Bin Laden. Chastain appeared last year's THE TREE OF LIFE and THE HELP. Here she continues to play interesting, flawed, and relentless characters that are unique, thoughtful, and complex.

ZERO DARK THIRTY is one enriching, compelling, masterpiece of cinema that dares to be seen. Not for everyone's taste; it's slow pace builds up speed for the climatic ending; an ending we already know about. But in Bigelow's hands, this review found himself sitting on the edge of his seat. 5 out of 5 stars!! Highly recommended!!

Phil sees TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D at the Century 20 Oakridge-January 4, 2013

So my very first film of 2013 just happened to be a horror movie and I was very excited about this. If this is your first time reading my reviews, let me reiterate something that I have said many, many times prior: I LOVE HORROR MOVIES! I grew up watching these films, I have books about them, I have them on DVD and Blu-Ray, etc. So I made my way over to the Century 20 Theater in Oakridge Mall to see TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D, the latest entry in the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE franchise.

The film picks up where Tobe Hooper's 1974 original masterpiece left off; in fact several scenes from the first film are used in the opening credits to illustrate to the audience what happened the rest of the day after Sally (Marilyn Burns) escaped. Right when the opening credits end, the film begins as we see a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounding the Sawyer house, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family (look for a cameo by genre actor Bill Mosley as Drayton Sawyer). Standing by is Sheriff Hooper (Thom Barry), who is outnumbered, overpowered, and unable to prevent this from happening.

Decades later a young girl named Heather Miller (Alexandra Daddario) discovers that she was adopted after she learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from her grandmother Verna Sawyer (Marilyn Burns once again). She decides to bring her boyfriend Ryan (Tremaine Neverson), and two other friends, Nikki (Tania Raymonde) and Kenny (Keram Malicki-Sánchez) along on the road trip to check out her inheritance. Upon arriving, Heather discovers that she has inherited a Southern mansion, however she is unaware of the terror that lurk in the basement below, namely her long, lost cousin Leatherface (Dan Yeager).

So before I get into my critique of the film, there are some interesting background and behind the scenes information that you should know about, especially if you are a fan of the series. First off is that in 2007, Platinum Dunes (Michael Bay's company that relaunched the series in 2003) announced that the company would not be producing a third film for the franchise. In October 2009, it was announced that Twisted Pictures and Lions Gate Entertainment were attempting to purchase the rights to the franchise, with Twisted Pictures producing and Lions Gate distributing. They negotiated a multi-picture deal with Bob Kuhn and Kim Henkel, who own the rights to the series. Lions Gate announced that it would be now partnering with Nu Image to produce the next film, and that John Luessenhop (LOCKDOWN, TAKERS) would direct the film. Producer Carl Mazzocone also announced that the story will pick up where Tobe Hooper's original film left off. Now that you're all caught up, please allow me to go on a rant for a bit. And this is directed solely towards the filmmakers of TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D.

TCM PART 2 Movie Poster (1986)
So now I'm supposed to ignore all of the other films and just pretend they didn't exist because this film is now being touted by you guys as "the official sequel" because it picks up where Hooper's original left off? And I'm also supposed to forget about the remake and its prequel as well? Let me explain something to you all. By doing this, you are dismissing and ignoring all of the contributions that these talented filmmakers did for this franchise. In fact, by doing so, you are spitting on all their hard work, their blood, sweat, and tears that they have put into the legacy of Leatherface and his films. Tobe Hooper's astounding THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE PART 2 is a brilliant film that commented on the mentality of greed that was predominate throughout the 80s Regan-era America. LEATHERFACE: THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III was directed by the talented Jeff Burr, who had a helluva time making the film on schedule and then having to deal with the MPAA to get his film rated and shown. TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE NEXT GENERATION boasts early film appearances by Renée Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey, who both turned in great performances in the film. For my generation, these three films helped add to the legacy of the series and helped turn Leatherface into a horror icon on par with his peers such as Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger.

TCM Remake Movie Poster (2003)
At the dawn of the new millennium, it looked like Leatherface was all but forgotten. However all that changed with 2003's THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remake. Directed by Marcus Nispel and produced by Michael Bay, the remake was first met with controversy among horror fans, but it nonetheless was a huge commercial success. Plus it was the highest grossing film of the entire franchise! It reinvigorated the series and it reintroduced Leatherface into the 21st century and to a whole new generation of kids who had never seen the original movie. The film's boxoffice success was responsible for starting the trend of remakes of 70s/80s horror films that continues to this very day. The 2006 prequel, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING was a flawed film to say the least, but the tone of the movie works very well and actress Jordana Brewster was great in it.

In my opinion, all these talented people that worked in front of and behind the camera deserve more respect than this. Maybe I'm getting all worked up for nothing. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I feel like we, the horror fans, and the TCM fans, are being insulted, along with all those who made all the previous films that I mentioned. But like I said, that's how I see it and that's how I feel about all of this.

So now that I've had my say, let me tell you all what I thought about the film.

The film itself did absolutely nothing for me. The story was flat and added nothing new, all the characters were two dimensional and were about as deep as a child's waiting pool, and every single scare in it was predicable as well as recycled. There's someone being strung up on a meat hook, there's someone being chainsawed in half, and the ever popular body popping out of the icebox. Seen it!

Now there is something that I would like to point out that I noticed in the film, and it's a major continuity error. So if the beginning of the film takes place on the same day as the first film, logic dictates that it takes place in 1974. But when we skip forward and the audience is first introduced to Heather, she looks to be about 23 years-old. So my question is this: shouldn't Heather be about 40 years-old and not 23? Also, when she in the interrogation room at the police station and she begins to look through a box that contained all the files and newspaper articles about the burning of the Sawyer house, the date on the newspaper simply says, "August 18th." So now I assume that since there's no year, and since Heather is so young, we are now lead to believe that the events did not take place in 1974, but now it all happened sometime in the late 1980's? Now who was the idiot that thought of that? I'm sorry but I don't think even Sherlock Holmes could figure out this continuity mess!

The only redeeming aspect of the film was that the special effects were done by the great KNB EFX, so at least the death scenes were gory and bloody. Also Alexandra Daddario's acting was decent in the film. Now I've seen her in other films like THE BABYSITTERS, PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTENING THIEF, and HALL PASS. She is a talented and very beautiful actress, but as to why she signed on to appear in this film I have no idea.

Oh I almost forgot, the 3D effects were atrocious and only made the film even more hideous looking than it already was. As I write this review, the film grossed $23 million dollars during its opening weekend. I'm sorry to admit that I helped contributed to that.

Even though we're only a few days into the new year, TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D gets my vote as worst movie of 2013! The film doesn't bring anything new; in fact the only thing it did do was officially kill the franchise! So it is with heavy heart that I say goodbye to Leatherface. It's been swell knowing you! 1 out of 5 stars!! Avoid with extreme prejudice!!

Phil's Halloween Horrors Marathon, Day 25: Phil attends the RiffTrax Live Broadcast of BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR at the Century 20 Oakridge-October 25, 2012

Hello again everybody and welcome to Day Twenty-Five! So this past Thursday night I attended the all new live RiffTrax broadcast of BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR. Some of you may remember that I attended the MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE live broadcast back in August. Now believe it or not, BIRDEMIC was way worse than MANOS!!

So if you don't know what a Rifftrax is, let me you all a quick definition. Rifftrax "are downloadable audio commentaries featuring comedians Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett heckling (or riffing) films in the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000, a TV show in which Nelson was the head writer, and later the host. The RiffTrax are sold online and delivered by digital download," according to the website Wikipedia. So I headed over there to catch this awesome cinematic event!

Before the show, the RiffTrax broadcast had some hilarious jokes put up on the screen to get the audience primed and ready. Then at 8pm, the show began! Coming to us live from a theater in Nashville, Tennessee, the night started off with a side-splitting short entitled NORMAN CHECKS IN, which in a way was kind of a prequel to the short WELCOME BACK, NORMAN that I saw back in August. In the short, our favorite traveling salesman checks in to a hotel that, unfortunately, is bombarded with the annual taxidermy convention, which caused his room to be given to another guest. As a result of this, Norman is given the room from Hell. And of course we cannot forget his wonderful catchphrase, "Ughhhhhhhhhh!" It was hilarious!

Original Promotion Poster (2010)
Then it was time for Mike, Kevin, and Bill to riff our main feature. Now, I would like to right away apologize to all of you people out there who actually BIRDEMIC on purpose. I take this apology very seriously for this one simple reason: the film was made here in the South Bay, Yes, the film was shot all around here: San Jose, San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, all up and down Highway 1, Highway 17, and Highway 101. The movie was made by local filmmaker James Nguyen, who founded Moviehead.com, an online movie theater back in 1998. Then in 2001, he produced and directed  the romantic thriller JULIE AND JACK. Then in 2010 BIRDEMIC, was released, which was largely self-financed and produced through Nguyen's Moviehead Pictures company for a budget of less than $10,000. Production began ion 2006 and took about four years to produce. The film soon became known as one of the worst films ever made, which gave it notoriety and a massive cult following. It was picked for distribution by Severin Films and released on Blu-Ray and DVD.

To be honest, I don't know if I can review this film. I have never seen a film this bad before. And I love bad movies! I mean, for crying out loud, I worship these films! I have seen PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE over a hundred times! I've seen THE ROOM! I've seen SPACE THING! Hell, I've even seen JERSEY GIRL!! And I've also seen the full length version of MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE!! But this film...I don't know...what I saw....life doesn't make sense anymore.

Here is the film's official synopsis: A platoon of eagles and vultures attacks the residents of a small town. Many people die. It's not known what caused the flying menace to attack. Two young lovers Rod (Alan Bagh) and Nathalie (Whitney Moore) manage to fight back, but with the death totals rising high will they survive the Birdemic?

Bill Corbett, Kevin Murphy, & Michael J. Nelson
This film should be shown in all film school classes as to what NOT to make! The film is all around bad! Real bad!! The acting is slightly above a junior high play, the sound is damn awful and you can barely make out what the actors (I use that term very loosely), the directing was way below amateurish, the CGI special effects (again very loosely) was so bad it was ridiculous, the birds in the film were so fake looking it was sad, and it took over 45 minutes for the damn birds to attack! The first half of the film we are forced to watch computer salesman Rod court the very hot supermodel Nathalie. Alan Bagh will go down is cinematic history as one of the worst actors of all times! The man can't even act walking! Thank goodness for Whitney Moore! Out of all the so-called actors in the film, she was the most believable. She looks like a model, and when we see her in her super sexy lingerie, that was the most believable part of the film! As scary as this film sounds, James Nguyen is currently finishing up BIRDEMIC 2: THE RESURRECTION in 3D!!

Yes, the guys had one helluva time ripping this film a new one! Now I now that these guys are professionals and it's their job to make fun of these types of movies, but this one must have been one helluva doozy for them to make fun of. However the guys stepped up to the challenge, and I gotta say that this was their BEST RiffTrax show ever! Mike, Kevin, and Bill never let up once, never fumbled a joke, and they kept the audience in stitches all night! I have never laughed so hard before in my entire night!

This was a great RiffTrax event! I really hope these guys will release this show on Blu-Ray and DVD soon because I want a copy of this so I can watch it over and over again! Phil attends the RiffTrax Live Broadcast of MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE at the Century 20 Oakridge-August 16, 2012

Hello again everybody! So this past Thursday night, my sister Stephanie, my brother Thomas and his fiancee Sharon and I attended the live RiffTrax broadcast of MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE, one of the WORST movies ever made! So we all couldn't wait to see this show!

The RiffTrax are sold online and delivered by digital download," according to the website Wikipedia.

Before the show, the RiffTrax broadcast had some hilarious jokes put up on the screen to get the audience primed and ready. Then at 8pm, the show began! Coming to us live from a theater in Nashville, the night started off with a couple of side-splitting shorts. The first short entitled WELCOME BACK, NORMAN was about a traveling salesman named Norman who flies back to his hometown airport and all the hilarious shenanigans that happens to him and his car. Now what I would like to know is this: exactly what kind of film was this supposed to be anyway? Was it a comedy? A documentary? An educational short about the plight of the American salesman? Whatever the point of making this film was, thanks to the RiffTrax crew, I was laughing hysterically, especially when they popularized Norman's catch phrase of "Ugh!" The whole audience was quoting this throughout the rest of the show!

The second short was an educational short that was just really creepy! AT YOUR FINGERTIPS: CYLINDERS showed the young children of America in the 1970's how much fun it is to make things out of cylinders. Arts and crafts were never this funny, as the guys tore this short a new one!

Newspaper ad for premiere in El Paso. 11/15/66
After the shorts, Mike had to make way for our "sponsor" for this evening's show. He then proceeded to show us an old Sixties commercial of a man drinking prune juice. Now if that wasn't scary enough, the man had a SECOND glass of prune juice! Yup, every man, woman, and child squirmed in their seats during this one!

Then it was time for the main event of the evening! Now the film was featured in the final episode of season four of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) on January 30, 1993 (#424 to be exact) and it immediately became the show's most popular episode! The film was written, directed, produced, and starred Harold P. Warren, who at the time was a Texas fertilizer salesman (which explains way the film sticks like poo)! The films about a vacationing family who get lost and stumble upon a Satanic Inn run by a lackey named Torgo who, "takes care of the place while The Master is away." While watching this, I did have flashback jokes from the old MST3K episode, but it was only fleeting.  That night, Nelson, Murphy, and Corbett unveiled an all new riff and jokes that made the audience laugh so hard that I thought I saw people passing out! The jokes were right on, creative, and just flat out hilarious! I think their riff was better than the original! As Mike said, "It's the worst film ever made that's not a TRANSFORMERS movie." Also, during the show's credits, Torgo sings his version of the classic Eagles song "Take It Easy," with the lyrics telling the film from his point of view! The video showed clips of the upcoming MANOS sequel!! The film was written, produced, and directed by Rupert Tailbot Munch (who plays Torgo in the sequel) and looks to have some of the cast of the original film to make appearances!

From the workprint discovered in 2011.
Now a quick sidebar for you cinephiles!  According to Wikipedia, "In 2011, the original 16mm Ektachrome camera workprint of MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE was discovered in a collection of 16mm films by Ben Solovey, a Florida State film school grad. Solovey announced his intention to preserve and restore MANOS for a High Definition Blu-ray release. The DVD release is a digital copy created from a 35mm print magnified from a 16mm workprint. Solovey financed the restoration via crowd funding website Kickstarter, raising $48,000 (nearly five times the initial goal). The restored print will be released on Blu-ray in the fall of 2012." How unbelievable is this bit of news? Yes folks, pretty soon you can watch the worst film ever made in glorious High Definition in the very near future! What a wonderful age we live in!!

Bill Corbett, Kevin Murphy, & Michael J. Nelson
This was a great RiffTrax event! I really hope these guys will release this show on Blu-Ray and DVD soon because I want a copy of this so I can watch it over and over again just like my MST3K DVD!! Now for all you folks out there who missed out on all this laughter, don't worry because you'll be getting a second chance to see these guys again real soon! On October 25, 2012, there will be another RiffTrax live event, and this time they will be riffing on the modern cult classic BIRDEMIC, which was filmed in Sunnyvale, the next city over from San Jose! And just in case you have never seen this film....well.....let's just say that you have never experienced pain like this before! If you thought MANOS was bad, what until you see this cinematic piece of crap! So mark this date on your calender and be sure to check out RiffTrax Live!!
