Phil’s Top Ten Greatest Scream Queens of All Time - February 6, 2019

Besides writing for my blog, I've been very fortunate to write for other publications, both physical media (magazines and newspapers) and online websites over the years. One of those websites was the now defunct Blumhouse.com. About four years ago, I contacted an old friend of mine, who just happened to be the editor-in-chief of the website. I have known her for years, going all the way back to our Fangoria days, which I also wrote that website as well. I sent her some samples, and I ended up writing my first article for the website, ""PRESENTING THE TEN GREATEST SCREAM QUEENS OF ALL TIME!" which was posted back in December 27, 2016. Here, I listed my favorite Scream Queens from my past in alphabetical order and soon, it was being shared by the actresses themselves through several social media outlets, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I was honored to have had my article shared by these talented women.

The reason I'm mentioning all this is that now in 2019, Blumhouse.com is no longer and is now called The 13th Floor. While it still has articles, stories, and news, it's different than it once was, and my article is no longer on their website. However, while cleaning out some of my old files on my computer, I accidentally discovered my original copy of my article! This was a very pleasant surprise, indeed! So I looked it over, made some changes to it, and updated as well. Overall, I  am very proud of it, but I found myself reminiscing of my youthful, carefree days of yeasterday.

I was very luck to be alive at the right place at the right time, and that time was called the 1980's. Granted, not everything was great in America at that time. Reaganomics, Black Monday, crack, the AIDS epidemic, and the cold war were taking its toll on the country, and growing up in the middle of all this wasn't fun. But during this decade, two very important events took place that would change my life forever.

At the beginning of the 80's, the VCR revolutionized home entertainment. Now, there were these cool places called video stores where I could rent movies. It's here that I was exposed to, what seemed at that time, an endless supply of horror movies. And trust me when I say that I rented every single one that had in stock! By the end of the decade, a new late night TV show debuted on the USA Network. It was called USA Up All Night and it aired every Friday and Saturday night and was hosted by Rhonda Shear and Gilbert Gottfried. Because of this show, my love for low budget B-movies began as well as my obsession for the buxom, bare breasted, badass actresses that became known as Scream Queens!

During this time, these ladies became the most popular actresses in the world, and garnered a huge and loyal fan base. They were all over the media outlets, appearing in magazines like Femme Fatales and Scream Queen Magazine. They were on E! Entertainment channel, MTV, and Entertainment Tonight as well as at film and comic conventions all over the country. While it was hard to narrow it down, these ladies proved to me time and time again that they were the best of the best. So, without further adieu, here is my list of the Top Ten Greatest Scream Queens of All Time!

1) Michelle Bauer - One of the members of the Scream Queen Trio that dominated USA Up All Night, Bauer has appeared in 152 films. In fact, between 1987 and 1998, she starred in over 36 movies! With films like ROLLERBLADE, HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS, THE PHANTOM EMPIRE, SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA, NIGHTMARE SISTERS, VIRGIN HIGH, ASSAULT OF THE PARTY NERDS, and THE TOMB, her status as a Scream Queen has been confirmed. By the 2010's, she starred in several of director David DeCoteau's 1313 film series, appeared in in Full Moon feature's GINGERDEAD MAN 2: PASSION OF THE CRUST, and teamed up with her fellow queens Linnea Quigley and Brinke Stevens for the 2014 film 3 SCREAM QUEENS. Her latest titles are DEATH HEADS: BRAIN DRAIN and THE PASSION CHRONICLES.

2) Monique Gabrielle - They broke the mold when they made this woman. Blonde, buxom, and breathtakingly beautiful, Gabrielle mad a splash in the acting world playing Tracey alongside future Hollywood superstar Tom Hank's in the 1982 comedy BACHELOR PARTY. In 1987, she appeared in the three of her most popular films ever: AMAZON WOMEN ON THE MOON, EMMANUELLE 5, and DEATHSTALKER II, the last two films were for the legendary Roger Corman's Concorde/New Horizons Home Video. Also, look for here in NOT OF THIS EARTH, THE RETURN OF SWAMP THING, TRANSYLVANIA TWIST, HARD TO DIE, EVIL TOONS, and the highly entertaining SCREAM QUEEN HOT TUB PARTY. In 2003, Gabrielle married adult film director Tony Angove and now runs her own adult film production company called Monique Gabrielle's Purrfect Productions in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

3) Debra Lamb - Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Lamb got her big break in John Hughes' PLANES TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES (although her scene would be left on the cutting room floor) before going on to star in a slew of classic B-movie gems like THE INVISIBLE MANIAC, BEVERLY HILLS VAMP, EVIL SPIRITS, and DEATH ROW GAME SHOW, which was released on Blu-Ray from Vinegar Syndrome recently. After leaving the industry for personal reasons, Lamb returned to acting in 2012, and has starred in several films, including THE G-STRING HORROR, DISCIPLES, and A BLOOD STORY. She is also an accomplished author and was a writer for the publication Dark Beauty Magazine from 2011 to 2015. She currently has nine projects in various stages of production, including BLOOD CRAFT, YOU BELONG TO ME, and FRUIT OF THE POISONOUS TREE.

4) Becky LeBeau - She wasn't your typical Scream Queen. In fact, she wasn't really a Scream Queen at all, However, this curvaceous and busty actress bounced her way into many of young male adolecent dreams as well as in the movies. Making a big splash in the 1986 comedy BACK TO SCHOOL with comic legend Rodney Dangerfield, LeBeau went on to act in several erotic, comedy, and sci-fi films like BEVERLY HILLS GIRLS, NOT OF THIS EARTH, BIKINI DRIVE-IN, DINOSAUR ISLAND, and POINT OF SEDUCTION: BODY CHEMISTRY III. She also created the popular Playboy Channel show Soft Bodies during the 1990's, which was the precursor to her new multi-million dollar company called FantasyOne.

5) Linnea Quigley - She was the reigning "Queen of the B's" during the height of the USA Up All Night era. Standing at only 5'2", this short and petite actress appeared in some of the greatest horror and B-movies of all time, including SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT, CREEPOZOIDS, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS, SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA, VICE ACADEMY 1 & 2, and the recent 3 SCREAM QUEENS directed by David DeCoteau. Several of her films have been released on Blu-Ray, including NIGHTMARE SISTERS and the double feature MURDER WEAPON/DEADLY EMBRACED from Vinegar Syndrome.

6) Debbie Rochon - When it comes to modern day Scream Queens, no one comes close to what this Canadian actress has accomplished. With a staggering 249 titles to her credit and counting, Rochon is the embodiment of an independent film actress. Look for for her in TROMEO AND JULIET, TERROR FIRMER, SANTA CLAWS, WITCHOUSE 3: DEMON FIRE, HELLBLOCK 13, PLAY-MATE OF THE APES, KILLJOY 2: DELIVERANCE FROM EVIL, BIKINI BLOODBATH, and the sequel BIKINI BLOODBATH SHAKESPEARE. She has also written for publications like Fangoria Magazine and Videoscope Magazine, and was an on-air personality for several radio and Internet shows.

7) Jewel Shepard - This beloved actress stole my heart when I first saw her appear in Dan O'Bannon's 1985 THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. She went on to appear in a number of movies like MY TUTOR, HOLLYWOOD HOT TUBS, HOLLYWOOD HOT TUBS 2: EDUCATING CRYSTAL, CHRISTINA, PARTY CAMP, and CAGED HEAT II: STRIPPED OF FREEDOM. She's also an author and has written two fantastic books. The first was the 1992 "Invasion of the B-Girls" published by Eclipse Books, where she interviewed several of her peers like Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley, Mary Woronov, and Yvette Vickers.. The other was her 1996 autobiography "If I'm So Famous, How Come Nobody;s Ever Heard Of Me?" by Kitchen Sink Press. She's also written for publications like Details, Premiere, and Cosmopolitan. Since 2011, Shepard has been struggling with invasive breast cancer and has undergone several treatments, including chemotherapy, had lymph nodes removed, and a double mastectomy. Despite all this, she returned to acting with her latest film SLASHER.COM,which was released in 2017.

8) Tiffany Shepis - Let me say this right away: I love Tiffany Shepis! Seriously, how can you not? Not only is she beautiful, funny, and smart, but she is also one hell of an actress! She got her big break in the 1994 Troma classic TROMEO AND JULIET, directed by the great Lloyd Kaufman and written by James Gunn (yes, that James Gunn). Since then, she has gone on to star in over 137 movies, including CITIZEN TOXIE: THE TOXIC AVENGER IV, TERROR FIRMER, SCARECROW, DELTA, DELTA, DIE!, DETOUR, CHAINSAW CHEERLEADERS, BLOOD OATH, BONNIE & CLYDE VS. DRACULA, THE QUEEN OF SCREAMS, DROPPING EVIL, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, and the SyFy Channel's SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE. I had the pleasure of meeting here at the Osio Theater in Monterey in October of 2017 for the special roadshow screening of VICTOR CORWLY, the fourth installment of the HATCHET series created by filmmaker Adam Green. In 2010, Shepis married writer/director Sean Tretta and broke millions of single guys' hearts, but we still love her anyway.

9) Brinke Stevens - It doesn't get any classier or sexier than Brinke Stevens! Born in San Diego, California, this former scientist turned actress became of the most beloved Scream Queen of all time. After appearing in the 1982 slasher film THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE, her career took off and she never looked back. With over 160 titles to her name, including SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA, NIGHTMARE SISTERS, SLAVE GIRLS FROM BEYOND INFINITY, HAUNTING FEAR, MOB BOSS, BAD GIRLS FROM MARS, TEENAGE EXORCIST, and HYBRID to name a few, she has received worldwide fame and a legion of fans. Fun fact: Stevens was briefly married to comic book artists Dave Stevens, creator of "The Rocketeer" and was the inspiration for his character Bettie. They both remained friends until Dave's passing in 2008.

10) Julie Strain - This statuesque Amazonian stands at an astounding 6'1", making her the tallest Scream Queen on the list! With 118 credits to her name, she became the new "Queen of the B-movies" from the late 90's to the mid-2000's. She starred in several popular action and sci-fi films, including THE DALLAS CONNECTION, SORCERESS, STARSTRUCK, LETHAL SEDUCTION, DAY OF THE WARRIOR, THE ROWDY GIRLS, BATTLE QUEEN 2020, and provided voiceover work for the animated movie HEAVY METAL 2000 and the video game Heavy Metal K.A.K.K. 2. For a time, Strain was married to Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Editor-In-Cheif of Heavy Metal magazine. She was also Penthouse Pet of the Month June 1991 and Penthouse Pet of the Year 1993. Strain announced her retirement from acting in October 2008. On July 16th 2018, it was announced by her on her Facebook wall that Strain was now suffering from dementia. All her fans continue to send her well wishes and hope she is resting.

And there you have it my faithful readers! My Top Ten Greatest Scream Queens of All Time! Boy, did I have fun taking this little trip down Memory Lane! Back then, staying up all night was the only way to see some of these cult classics!  Nowadays, many of these films are available on Blu-Ray and on many streaming services, like Shudder, Troma Now, Full Moon Direct! So do yourself a favor, make a big bowl of popcorn, grab some drinks, and invite a bunch of your friends and kick back with one of these movies tonight!! Just make sure that if you invite any ladies over, they're not actually a couple of Hollywood chainsaw hookers!!

Phil Celebrates the 26th Anniversary Premiere of USA UP ALL NIGHT-November 3, 2015

Time flies you're having fun, especially if you were watching one of the best television shows of all time! Believe it or not, this year marks the 26th anniversary of the premiere of one of my favorite shows ever: USA UP ALL NIGHT!! Hard to believe that this beloved and treasured series originally debuted over a quarter of a century ago!! Now I mentioned the show several times in my other reviews but never really talked about it. So let me tell you all about its history and what made it so great. A lot you out there may already know about the show or you remembered watching it, so have fun strolling down Memory Lane with me. And if you've never heard of the show before, let me take you all on trip back to that awesome decade called the Nineties and a little late night television show that would change my life forever!

Ask any fan of horror films, B-movies, and cult classics, there was one show that you had to tune in every weekend, and that show was USA UP ALL NIGHT, which aired on the USA Cable Network. Hosted by comedians Rhonda Shear and Gilbert Gottfried, it was THE place to watch your favorite low budget gems! I discovered the show on March 21, 1992. It was my senior year in high school and I was really into horror films, comic books, and indie/punk music. At that time, I thought I knew it all, seen it all, and done it all. However, that fateful night proved to me just how wrong I was. It was a cold Saturday night and my younger brother Thomas was flipping through the TV Guide and told me that this show called USA UP ALL NIGHT was going to air all three TOXIC AVENGER films, hosted by Gottfried. Now I've heard about the movies, but I never had the chance to see them. So I watched all three films, from 11pm to 5am with Gottfried cracking jokes during his segments! It was hysterical and just laugh-out-loud fun! After that, I was hooked for life and from then on I would faithfully watch the show every weekend till the wee hours of the morning!

The series premiered on January 7, 1989 (holy crap I'm old) and comedian Gilbert Gottfried was hired on to host the Saturday night edition out in New York. Halfway through the inaugural season, actress/comedian Caroline Schlitt was brought on board to host the Friday night edition out in Los Angeles. By December 1990, Schlitt had left the show and her replacement would be the sultry, sexy and hilarious comedian/model/actress Rhonda Shear. Beginning in January 1991, Shear would tape her segments from her apartment (aka sound stage set but it was adorable looking) as well as at popular nightclubs, venues and attractions in and around LA with Gottfried doing the same thing out in New York City (in 1995 Shear would move to New York as well). The series gained a massive cult audience and became one of the network's most popular shows for years, but like all good things, it wouldn't last forever.

In 1998, the network came under new management and changes were made to their programming. Wanting to go after a more commercial, mainstream audience, many of the network's shows like Pacific Blue and Silk Stalkings were either overhauled or canceled. Even USA UP ALL NIGHT wasn't immune to the changes. In February that same year, the show was canceled and both Gottfried and Shear were removed as hosts. The network continued to use the "UP ALL NIGHT" banner but they were now using it while showing mainstream films like THE RUNNING MAN and TRADING PLACES. This angered the show's hardcore fans (including myself) and they began calling and sending angry letters to the network demanding both Shear and Gottfried to return and have the show put back to its original format. However, their voices fell on deaf ears and by 2002 the "UP ALL NIGHT" banner was finally removed from existence. It truly was an end of an era in television history.

The series maybe long gone, but fans have been showing their love for it all over the internet with blogs, websites, and on Youtube where there's a plethora of video clips of the show to watch! Even Rhonda Shear herself has uploaded most of her hosting segments on her channel (which you can check out by clicking here)! Check out some of the intros, bumpers, wacky sketches, guest stars and all the fun the show had to offer for their fans!!

If it wasn't for USA UP ALL NIGHT, I wouldn't have discovered THE TOXIC AVENGER films or Troma Studios for that matter. I also wouldn't have seen such amazing B-movies like ASSAULT OF THE KILLER BIMBOS, SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA, GOOD GIRLS DON'T, CLASS OF NUKE'EM HIGH, PARTY CAMP, DR. ALIEN, BEVERLY HILLS VAMP, VICE ACADEMY, SLAVE GIRLS FROM BEYOND INFINITY, VAMPIRE VIXENS FROM VENUS, GETTING LUCKY, MIRACLE BEACH, BAD GIRLS DORMITORY, SUMMER SCHOOL TEACHERS, NIGHTMARE SISTERS, THE BIKINI CARWASH COMPANY, ROLLERBLADE WARRIORS: TAKEN BY FORCE, CHOPPER CHICKS IN ZOMBIETOWN, and WILD MALIBU WEEKEND for starters. And I wouldn't have learned about filmmakers like Lloyd Kaufman, David DeCoteau, Rick Sloane, Jim Wymoski, Charles Band, Richard Gabai, and Fred Olen Ray. Plus not too mention all the legendary Scream Queens I discovered like Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, Monique Gabrielle, Jewel Shepard, Debra Lamb, Ginger Lynn Allen, Elizabeth Kaitan, and J.J. North just to name a few.

USA UP ALL NIGHT helped nurture my love and appreciation of these low budget films, as well as open my mind up to a whole new world of movies that I didn't even knew existed. These films hold a special place in heart, and remind me of days gone by. To Rhonda Shear, Gilbert Gottfried, and to all the talented filmmakers, actors, and scream queens, I would just like to say from the bottom of my heart thank you! Thank you all for the memories, for the laughs, for keeping me company, and most of all, for keeping me up all night!! Long Live USA UP ALL NIGHT!!!

Phil Goes Hollywood: Phil attends the 1st Annual Day of the Scream Queens at Dark Delicacies-January 19, 2014

Once again I traveled back down so sunny Southern California to attend another amazing event (I seriously need to think about moving down there). On Sunday, my friend Mo Whelan and I attended the First Annual Day of the Scream Queens event, which was held at the ultra cool Dark Delicacies bookstore over in Burbank. Over a dozen of legendary and modern scream queens were there signing autographs and taking pictures, and yours truly was there in the thick of it all!

The man responsible for making all this happen is David DeCoteau, who's directed some of the best horror, B-movies, and cult classics of all time such as NIGHTMARE SISTERS, SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA, 1313: COUGAR CULT, PUPPETMASTER III: TOULON'S REVENGE, CREEPOZOIDS, MURDER WEAPON, IMMORTAL KISS: QUEEN OF THE NIGHT, and DR. ALIEN. DeCoteau has worked with several with these actresses, many have appeared in more than one of his films.

Those actresses in attendance for this extraordinary event were as follows: Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, Michelle Bauer, Lynn Lowry, Donna Wilkes, Deanna Lund, Darcy DeMoss, Kristine DeBell, Eileen Dietz, Laurene Landon, Helene Udy, Jessica Morris, Lisa London, Trina Parks, Carolyn Purdy-Gordon, and Jean Louise O'Sullivan.

Also attending the event were many celebrities within the genre such as Charles Band from Full Moon Features, director Ted Newsom, screenwriter Kenneth J. Hall, and FRIDAY THE 13th music composer Harry Manfredini.

After all, this is the place where dreams come true!

Hello there my faithful followers and welcome to the return of Phil's B-Movie Madness! It's been a long time since I reviewed one of the many classic B-movies that I used to watch when I was younger. Now tonight's film is in my Favorite Top Ten B-Movies of All Time. Featuring an impressive ensemble cast, sophomore humor, cool special effects, and scantily bikini-clad girls, BEACH BABES FROM BEYOND has all the markings to make this a true B-movie classic for the ages!

The film's official synopsis is as follows: An intergalactic babe named Xena (Bellomo) borrows her dad's T-bird ship to do a little planet hopping with her two friends Luna (Landry) and Sola (Posey), but they run out of fuel unexpectedly, and must land on earth. They land on the California coast and run into Dave (Davis), Jerry (Steadman), and Ziggy (Roddy), where they have fun and a few close encounters at the beach. Dave's Uncle Bud (Estevez), who just wants to meditate and hang out, is being threatened with condemnation of his beach house unless he puts some money into repairs. The alien babes offer to enter the local bikini contest with their way-out designs to try and win the money he needs, but they are hampered by garment designer Sally (Quigley) who will stop at nothing to win.

Making cameos in the film are Don Swayze (younger brother of Patrick Swayze) and Jackie Stallone (Sylvester Stallone's mother) playing Xena's parents Gork and Yanna, Burt Ward (Robin from the 1960's TV show Batman) as suntan lotion king Mr. Bun, and Joey Travolta (younger brother of John Travolta) portrays scientist turn vegan snack shack owner Dr. Veg.

The film was the first release under the new Torchlight Entertainment banner, a line conceived by Full Moon founder Charles Band, which produced softcore films for the adult market. Band is an icon in the horror film world, having creating the PUPPET MASTER series, the SUBSPECIES series, and the TRANCERS series for Full Moon. His previous company Empire Pictures released such cult classics like GHOULIES, RE-ANIMATOR, TROLL, and FROM BEYOND. In the 1990's Band also created the family oriented company Moonbeam Entertainment to produced films aimed at kids and tweens. Torchlight Entertainment was just another way for Band to tap into a specific type of audience and entertain them the only way he knew how.

The film was directed by David DeCoteau, who was one of the Top Three B-movie directors during the 80s (the other two being Rick Sloane and Fred Olen Ray). DeCoteau has directed several low-budget classics from the 80s, such as CREEPOZOIDS, NIGHTMARE SISTERS, and DR. ALIEN. DeCoteau would also go on to direct films for Full Moon Entertainment: PUPPET MASTER III (1991), THE KILLER EYE (1999), and newest installment of Full Moon's flagship title,  2010's PUPPET MASTER: AXIS OF EVIL. All together, DeCoteau has directed over 80 films in his career!

At the end of every single Full Moon movie, there was a new instalment of Full Moon's VideoZone; a video magazine that contained behind the scenes making of, Spotlight interview, trailers, and ordering cool collectibles. BEACH BABES had it's own as well entitled Torchlight's VideoZone and it was very similar to Full Moon's. Now the VideoZone on the DVD here is different than the original that was seen on the VHS tape. The one on the DVD was the original version, but host Sara Suzanne Brown didn't like the way it was shot and complained to Band, thus having to reshoot her segments. While it was cool to see the original VideoZone, it would've been nice for Full Moon to have the VHS version included on the DVD as well. The transfer of the film isn't that great either, but seeing that this is the only way to watch the film now that the VHS copy is long out of print, I can't complain too much.

All in all, BEACH BABES FROM BEYOND is a cult classic that I hold near and dear to my heart! I rented the film when it first came out back in 1993 and I've held on to my old, beat up VHS tape for all this time. It's great to see it again on DVD. So if you're looking for some light, silly, sexy, B-movie fun, then look no further! 5 out of 5 stars!! Recommended!!

Welcome to Day Twelve of Phil's Halloween Horrors Marathon! Today's review will focus on a documentary about one of the greatest zombie films of all time! But I'm getting a head of myself, so let me back track first. On August 15, 1985, Orion Pictures released RETURN TO THE LIVING DEAD, written and directed by Dan O'Bannon. With its blend of horror, humor, gore, and slapstick, the film became a cult classic that still to this day is loved and revered among horror fans and critics alike. Now 26 years after the film's release, director Bill Philputt and writers Gary Smart and Christian Sellers pay tribute to O'Bannon's film with their in-depth, informative, and highly entertaining film MORE BRAINS! A RETURN TO THE LIVING DEAD.

Narrated by Brian Peck (who portrayed Scuz in the original film), the film chronicles the step by step process of the making of this legendary cult classic. From the pre-production nightmare that consisted of the legal battle between John Russo and George Romero over the rights to the film's title, original director Tobe Hooper backing out of the project and O'Bannon taking over even though he never directed a film before. Some of the issues that arose during the production of the film were the firing of special effects artist Bill Munns, the spats between the cast and O'Bannon, and the grueling 14 hour night shoots over the next 6 weeks took it's toll on the entire cast and crew. After filming was completed, the executives declared it "one notch above pornography." The film was finally released a year after it was finished and grossed over $14 million during its theatrical run.

Philputt left no stone unturned when making this film. It also helped the writers Smart and Sellers wrote the book The Complete History of The Return of the Living Dead, to which the documentary is based on. Philputt was able to get 25 members of the original cast and crew to conduct on-camera interviews, including Clu Gulager (Burt), James Karen (Frank), Don Calfa (Ernie), Beverly Randolf (Tina), Thom Mathews (Freddy), Jewel Shepard (Casey), Linnea Quigley (Trash), and Peck too, just to name a few. With these individuals sharing some hilarious, interesting, personal stories and memories, Philputt crafted an amazing film and really pulled together some fascinating facts for fans about this cult classic.

The special features on this DVD are just outstanding! First there's THE WON'T STAY DEAD: A LOOK AT RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART II: a half hour documentary on the making of the sequel and includes interviews with Michael Kenworthy (Jesse), Suzanne Snyder (Brenda), and Karen, Mathews, and Speck just to name a few. LOVE BEYOND THE GRAVE: A LOOK AT THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART 3: another short documentary chronicling the making of Part 3, including interviews with director Brian Yuzna, screenwriter John Penney, special effects make-up artist Steve Johnson, and actor Trevor Edmond (Curt). Resurrected Settings: The Filming Locations Today: both Speck and  Randolf host this very cool short showing us the actual filming locations as they are today, Stacey Q Live! An Exclusive "Tonight" music video, documentary deleted scenes, THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD told in 3 minutes, trailers for both MORE BRAINS! and NEVER SLEEP AGAIN: THE ELM STREET LEGACY, and A Conversation with Dan O'Bannon: The Final Interview: the last on-camera interview O'Bannon gave before his untimely passing from Crohn's Disease on December 17, 2009.

My conclusion is this: MORE BRAINS! A RETURN TO THE LIVING DEAD is a highly recommended documentary that belongs on every horror fans collection. In fact here's a real treat for all you creatures of the night: watch the original film and this documentary as a double feature! That would be the best way for you to honor the legacy of Dan O'Bannon! Go out and buy this DVD today! 5 out of 5 stars!

Hello again and welcome to Day Four of my Halloween Horrors Marathon! Now for today's film, I decided to make a slight deviation from our normal path and take you down a scenic route. Today's film is a documentary, but it's focus is on three talented actresses who appeared in some of the most memorable and cherished B-movies and horror flicks of all time! SCREAMING IN HIGH HEELS: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE SCREAM QUEEN ERA highlights that wonderful time of the late 80's and early 90's and, "How three little girls were smart to play stupid."

The documentary focuses on the lives and careers of Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, Michelle Bauer and how these three actresses rose to fame via the low budget, shot in five days, direct to video movies that this reviewer remembers with fond memory. In an era when Mom & Pop video stores ruled the country, these ladies became famous for appearing in films with titles such as SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOW-O-RAMA, HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS, SAVAGE STREETS, NIGHTMARE SISTERS, SLUMBER PART MASSACRE and other classic B-movie that contained horror, comedy, nudity, and gore; all wrapped up in lurid and explicit VHS box covers. Also interviewed for the documentary are directors Fred Olen Ray (ALIEN DEAD), David DeCoteau (CREEPOZOIDS), Richard Gabai (VIRGIN HIGH), Ted Newsom (ED WOOD: LOOK BACK IN ANGORA), actor Jay Richardson and Collum himself.

Combining on-screen interviews, clips from these revered B-movies, personal photographs, behind the scenes footage, and television footage, Collum weaves this hilarious, unflinching, and at times sad tale of this largely overlooked point in film history. Brinke, Linnea, and Michelle recall their early screen features, working for directors Ray and DeCoteau, their sudden rise in popularity, their brush with mainstream media, and the slow demise of the Mom & Pop video stores that lead to to the decline of work for these ladies.

I was very lucky to be at the right place at the right time. It was a time before chains like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video put the local video stores out of business (which is ironic now that these two corporate mega conglomerates are out of business). I used to spend my Friday and Saturday nights watching USA's Up All Night show, which is where I first discovered these films. I immediately became a fan, and spent the next several years watching every B-movie I could find. Along with the movies there were magazines (Femme Fatales and Scream Queen), trading cards, conventions, fan clubs, the list goes on. Along with my younger brother Thomas, we would spend countless hours watching and renting these films, especially during the summertime. With this film, Collum reminds me of just how special that moment in time was for me.

While informative and very entertaining, the only real complaint I have with the film is that at a scant 63 minutes, I felt like the film could've been stretched out into a full 90 minute feature. We could've benefited more information with their childhood and upbringings, their early films more, and for some reason, the film's ending just stops and it left me hanging. It would've been nice to hear about their resurgence in popularity, what projects they're currently working on now as we speak, and some final thoughts about their film legacy and reflect on what the term Scream Queen means to them now that they are older. But then again, that's just my opinion.

SCREAMING IN HIGH HEELS: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE SCREAM QUEEN ERA is a fun, enriching, and exciting nostalgic look back at an era that, sadly, is missed terribly. Sure these films were brimming with nudity, violence, and sex but there was a innocence to these films. Whenever I put on one of these films to watch, I always have a big smile on my face. 3 1/2 out of 5 stars! Recommended!

Phil's B-Movie Madness: Phil watches SLAVE GIRLS FROM BEYOND INFINITY (1987)-December 8, 2011

I felt like keeping my B-movie theme going for tonight. Plus I was in the mood to watch the beautiful Elizabeth Kaitan again. So for tonight's second feature, I traveled into space (and back to the mid-1980s) to watch SLAVE GIRLS FROM BEYOND INFINITY.

In the distant future, two young slaves Daria (Elizabeth Kaitan) and Tisa (Cindy Beal) escape from a space gulag only to crash on a nearby planet. There they meet Zed (Don Scribner), who offers them shelter. At dinner they meet another stranded couple: brother Rik (Carl Horner) and sister Shala (Brinke Stevens). However Zed's real plan is reveled: he turns the girls and another guests loose in his jungle preserve to serve as his prey in a sadistic man hunt. Armed only with knives and their wits, the girls must battle their way across the jungle to a hidden arms cache before Zed catches and kills them both.

Again, like the previous film, it's just a wonderful excuse to switch off your brain and have fun! Kaitan is great in the film and looks so beautiful in her slave costume. But when she is clothed in her sexy lingerie outfit, I thought I was going to explode! Remember I was a teenager when this film came out, so basically I was a walking hormone with feet. Now throw in the great Brinke Stevens being held down by giant cardboard robots butt naked on a well lit table, well let's just say I took a lot of cold showers back then. However, despite being a low budget film, the sets look very cool and the costumes (bikinis for the ladies) were awesome! The film should be viewed by pre-pubescent boys everywhere!

The film was co-written and directed by Ken Dixon, who, like Rosenberg, never made another film after this one. And like her, Dixon inadvertently created a bona fide cult classic that really sums up everything that was so great about watching B-movies from the 80s. The film was released to theaters by Charles Band's Urban Classics on September 18, 1987.

SLAVE GIRLS FROM BEYOND INFINITY is classic B-movie fun for the whole family! Granted that your family is asleep and you snuck downstairs to watch this movie with the lights off and the volume turned downed low. So have fun and don't get grounded!

Phil's B-Movie Madness: Phil watches ASSAULT OF THE KILLER BIMBOS (1988)-December 7, 2011

As you all may have noticed, whenever I get in a particular mood for a specific genre of film, I go all out! Since my review of CHILLERAMA, I've been watching some of my all-time favorite B-movies that I enjoyed watching many years ago. A lot of these films you may have never heard of, and that's OK. This is where I come in, to help you get acquainted with these unknown classics. So tonight I revisited one of my favorites, which has the best title in cinematic history. Tonight's viewing pleasure is the cult classic ASSAULT OF THE KILLER BIMBOS!

The film follows two go-go dancers, Lulu (Elizabeth Kaitan) and Peaches (Christina Whitaker). The girls are framed for the murder of their boss Wayne-O (Nick Cassavettes) by a sleazy gangster named Vinnie (Mike Muscat) who is the real killer. On the run from the law, they stop at a diner, where they're spotted. There they pick up waitress Darlene (Tammara Souza) who inadvertently joins the group. The three girls are involved in a crazy wild car chase with cops (one of the cops is played by GREASE nerd Eddie Deezen) as they head for Mexico, where they unexpectedly find Vinnie staying at a Mexican motel with his crazed, jealous girlfriend Poodles (Patti Astor). Soon the girls hatch out a clever plot to capture Vinnie so they can clear their names.

Now it was with this film that I fell in love with Elizabeth Kaitan. She was actually born in Hungary on July 19, 1960 and was brought to New York by her mother when she was 8 years old. She moved to Manhattan at age 18 and studied acting at the New York Academy of Theatrical Arts and was a member of the repertory company the American Theatre of Arts. She made her film debut in Troma's 1981 raunchy comedy WAITRESS and her acting career began. All together Kaitan appeared in 39 films before retiring in 1999 after making her last film VERONICA 2030 by Surrender Cinema, the erotica film label created by Charles Band.

This film doesn't take itself too seriously, and that what makes it fun to watch. Sometimes it's nice to just be entertained by a great B-movie. The screenplay was written by Ted Nicolaou, who would later direct THE SUBSPECIES series for Band's Full Moon Entertainment. Believe it or not, this was only one of two films that director Anita Rosenberg made (the first was MODERN GIRL). After this she just disappeared. I tried doing some research on whatever became of her, but I couldn't find anything. A real shame though, for Rosenberg has left us a great cult classic for us to enjoy forever. The film was released by Band's old film company Empire Pictures to theaters on May 6, 1988.

ASSAULT OF THE KILLER BIMBOS is a happy, go-lucky, feel good B-movie that will keep you entertained for 90 minutes. There aren't many films out there that can make you feel this way. A great film with a great title and great acting makes this B-movie a true cult classic!

Phil's Horror Watch: Entry 33: Phil watches CREEPOZOIDS (1987)-December 7, 2011

After watching director David DeCoteau's B-movie classic SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA the other night, I decided to watch another one of his films. After all, I had forgotten just how much fun they are to watch. So for today I headed back to 1987 to watch the scary and horrifying film called CREEPOZOIDS!

Set in the apocalyptic future year of 1998 (our old future), six years after the nuclear wars has reduced the world to rubble and ashes. A group of army deserters (which includes Linnea Quigley) take refuge from an acid rain storm in a seemingly abandoned laboratory complex. However, they soon discover that the lab was a top-secret government research center, where a hideous genetically-engineered monster still lurks. Now they must fight for survival against the creature called the Creepozoid!

This is a perfect example of a great cheesy B-movie to watch! Once again DeCoteau does a fantastic job of directing and really keeps the pace of the film moving. It doesn't stop or drag at any real spot. The film also boasts some really cool scares and sick gore, courtesy of some amazing special effects. Even the creature is nothing more than a guy in a rubber suit, but it looks awesome on film! Also keep your eyes peeled for some ugly mutant rats in the film , as they attack our army deserters. Plus it has a very creepy and disturbing ending that kinda freaked me out when I first saw it. And again, after all these years, it's still damn creepy!

While all this makes it sound like a winner, what most people remember about the film is the shower scene with Linnea Quigley. Yes, it is that hot and steamy, and no it wasn't because of the water people. It is one of the sexiest shower scenes ever captured on celluloid! I myself use to rewind that scene constantly, eventually wearing out that part of the film on my VHS. So as a result, I had to buy the film again. But after all this time, the film as a whole still holds up today, even though is was such a low budget film. According to DeCoteau, the film was shot in 15 days with a budget of only $150, 000! The film was released to theaters by Urban Classics (Charles Band's company) on October 2, 1987.

CREEPOZOIDS is probably one of the most under-rated films of the late 1980s. The film has it all: horror, action, science fiction, nudity, mutant rats, violence, military experiment creature gone amok, gore, and Linnea Quigley's infamous shower scene! What more could you ask from a B-movie? So what are you waiting for? Go check out this classic film tonight!

Phil's B-Movie Madness: Phil watches SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA-December 5, 2011

Yes, the title for tonight's movie is more than a mouthful. And yes, let me assure you that this is a real movie, and it's also one of my favorites. During the mid-80s, there was a bevy of B-movies to be found at my local Mom & Pop video store, which starred the hottest and most popular Scream Queens during this time. However, I originally saw this on the late night cable show USA UP ALL NIGHT, and I immediately fell in love with the film. So for tonight, I decided to stroll down Memory Lane to my teenage years to once again bare witness to the horror cult classic that is SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA!

Three frat boys Calvin (Andras Jones), Jimmie (Hal Havins), and Keith (John Stuart Wildman) sneak into the Tri-Delta sorority to witness the initiation of two new pledges Taffy (Brinke Stevens) and Lisa (Michelle Bauer). However the boys are busted by sorority sisters Rhonda (Kathi O'Brecht), Frankie (Carla Baron), and den mother Babs Peterson (Robin Stille billed as Robin Rochelle). As punishment, Babs sends the new pledges and the unwanted frat boys to the local bowling lane to steal a trophy. There the group meets Spider (Linnea Quigley) who is robbing the bowling alley. However an accident causes the trophy to break open, releasing an evil imp who then begins wreaking havoc by granting wishes that have dire consequences.

The film was directed by David DeCoteau, who was one of the Top Three B-movie directors during the 80s (the other two being Rick Sloane and Fred Olen Ray). DeCoteau has directed several low-budget classics from the 80s, such as CREEPOZOIDS, NIGHTMARE SISTERS, DR. ALIEN. DeCoteau would also go on to direct films for Charles Band's company Full Moon Entertainment: PUPPET MASTER III (1991), BEACH BABES FROM BEYOND (1993), THE KILLER EYE (1999), and newest installment of Full Moon's flagship title,  2010's PUPPET MASTER: AXIS OF EVIL. All together, DeCoteau has directed over 80 films in his career!

Another interesting and noteworthy fact is that this was the first film that had all three of the legendary Scream Queens together at once. Quigley, Stevens, and Bauer were at that time the biggest names in the B-movie universe. They appeared in countless films during the 1980s, however it was DeCoteau who was able to bring these ladies together in one film. He would do this again with NIGHTMARE SISTERS that same year, and almost 25 years later, DeCoteau would reunite them again in his upcoming film COUGAR CULT! This film had a limited theatrical release on January 29, 1988, courtesy of Band's Urban Classics label. It was later released on VHS and was in the 1990s a staple on the USA cable's late night movie show UP ALL NIGHT.

SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA is one of best B-movies to come out of the 1980s! While the film seems tame compare to today's standards, but what makes it so much fun was there's a touch of innocence to it. These films were just innocent fun and unfortunately they don't make 'em like this anymore. So if you're looking for a midnight movie to watch, give this film a whirl and have fun! Just let any imps out of bowling trophies!

Phil's Horror Watch, Day 27: Phil watches RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1986)-October 27, 2011

Here it is folks: Day 27 of my horror movie marathon! I took another trip back to the 80's (hey, there were a lot of great horror films from that era) and picked out another great zombie film that stayed to the conventions of the genre, while adding its own spin to the mix. So if you haven't seen RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD yet, you are missing out on a splatter zombie film classic!

The film's about two dim-witted medical supply warehouse employees Frank and Freddy (James Karen and Thom Mathews respectively) who accidentally release a deadly gas from a government drum into the air, which the vapors causes the dead in the nearby cemetery to rise up and feed on the brains of the living!

Also appearing in the film are Clu Gilager, Don Calfa, Beverly Randolf, and legendary 80's scream queens Linnea Quigley and Jewel Shepard. The film's soundtrack boasts some the best punk bands from that era, such as The Cramps, T.S.O.L., The Damned, 45 Grave and others.

The film was written and directed by Dan O'Bannon, who got his start when he and iconic director John Carpenter collaborated on his student film DARK STAR (which O'Brannon wrote and starred in). He then went on to write the screenplay for ALIEN (1979) and DEAD AND BURIED (1981). Originally O'Bannon was hired to write the script and horror director Tobe Hooper was set to direct the film. But when Hopper backed out of the project to make LIFEFORCE (which O'Bannon wrote as well) producers Tom Fox and John Russo offered O'Bannon the job as director. He accepted on the one condition that he could totally rewrite the film so that it differed from George Romero's zombie films. The film is more "splatstick" style morbid humor and eccentric dialogue. While the first half of the film is comedic, the second half is pure horror.

Another note worthy fact: Long before the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake and 28 DAYS LATER, the film boasts of having the image of FAST running zombies. Another one of O'Bannon's twists to the rewrite. The fast zombies were a total surprise to audiences who were use to the slow moving undead in Romero's films. Another fun aspect to the film is the combination of the old time actors (Karen, Gilager, and Calfa) blending perfectly with the young, inexperienced actors of the film. You have this great contrast of young and old in the film, which gives the film a great universal appeal.

Upon completion, the studio Orion Pictures deemed the film "unreleasable" and supposedly re-cut the film, then quietly released the film to theaters. However, audiences reacted positively to the film, and as a result, has become a huge cut classic. The film spawned four, count 'em, four sequels! But those films don't even come close to the original.

THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is a gory, scary, funny, and entertaining horror film that deserves to be part of everybody's film library.
