Phil sees KONG: SKULL ISLAND from Warner Bros. Pictures - April 22, 2017
When legendary movie studio RKO released the original KING KONG back in 1933, I don't think they could've predicted just how popular and iconic their creation would become. It's spawned two sequels back in the 1930's, a 1976 remake and a 1986 sequel, he fought Godzilla and other monsters in Japan in the 1960's, became a Saturday morning cartoon, a comic book series and was remade again by fanboy Peter Jackson in 2005. Now 12 years later, Warner Brothers decided to once again resurrect this beloved big hairy ape once again and pit him against one of the best A-list group of actors ever assembled. So are you ready for my review of KONG: SKULL ISLAND?!? If not, tough shit I'm doing this review!
The film's official synopsis: When a scientific expedition to an uncharted island awakens titanic forces of nature, a mission of discovery becomes an explosive war between monster and man. Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman and John C. Reilly star in a thrilling and original new adventure that reveals the untold story of how Kong became King.
Yup, that right there says it all!! Let me cut to the chase: you have Tom Hiddleston (Loki!), Samuel L. Jackson (Bad Ass Mutha Fucka!), Brie Larson (Marry me!), John Goodman (Another Bad Ass!), John C. Reilly (Hilarious!) plus Corey Hawkins (Yo Dre!), John Ortiz (AVPR Dude!), Tian Jing (Babe!) blowing shit up, getting their asses handed to them by King Kong, who then tears shit up by beating up all kinds of crazy looking monsters with a soundtrack that includes Jefferson Airplane, The Stooges, Creedence Clearwater Revival, David Bowie and Black Sabbath?!? Take all of my money now please!!!
But seriously, this a blast to watch. Major credit to director Jordan Vogt-Roberts for making such a kick ass movie. Known previously as a television director on shows such as Single Dad, Funny or Die Presents..., Death Valley and Mash Up, he gained acclaim and attention for his 2013 indie coming-of-age film THE KINGS OF SUMMER. It's amazing that four years later he's directing a multi-million dollar Hollywood film with major stars. It's also worthy noting just how much of a 180 he took when making this film. It doesn't look anything like THE KINGS OF SUMMER and that's astounding to see! Making a little indie film is totally different than making a major studio project so congratulations to Jordan Vogt-Roberts for pulling off this impossible feat!! I can't to see his next film project!!
KONG: SKULL ISLAND is one bad ass action packed adventure film that you need to see on the big screen! Also, for all you film fanatics out there, the movie is also being screened in 70mm special engagements is select cities!! So you have no excuse to not see this movie!! 5 out of 5 stars!! Highly recommended!!
KONG: SKULL ISLAND is currently playing in theaters nationwide. Check your local listings to see if it's playing at a theater near you. Also look for 70mm screenings in select cities as well.

Phil sees DOCTOR STRANGE in 3D from Marvel Studios/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures - December 8, 2016
In 1964, writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko (the creators of Spider-Man) unleashed a new and different type of superhero, one that would have a huge impact on the Marvel Universe. With this one character, a whole new universe opened up and the world of magic was unleashed, bringing with it the concept of multiverses. Now over 50 years later, this iconic and legendary comic book character has finally joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So let's chat about me seeing DOCTOR STRANGE in 3D this past weekend!
The film's official synopsis: Marvel's "Doctor Strange" follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City's Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilising a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I have one word to say about the movie: WOW!! When Marvel released CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOILDER, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, the bar was set very, very high to the point that I didn't think it would be possible to surpass these high acclaimed films, let alone have it even come close. But remember, this Marvel we're talking about here. Needless to say, this latest chapter in the MCU is one of their very best films!
British actor Benedict Cumberbatch is one of the finest actors out there today and this role was taylor made for him. First, he's speaking with an American accent, which is just weird but cool to hear. Second, he brings a lot of depth and humility to Doctor Steven Strange. When we first meet him, he is a gifted but very arrogant, conceded and selfish individual. It isn't till after the accident that he becomes worse. For him to come back from and become the hero is a massive undertaking. Cumberbatch brings his A-game and the embraces the character completely. Don't bother looking him in the movie you won't be able to find him. All you will see on the big screen is Doctor Strange himself.
Joining Cumberbatch on this marvelous (get it!) journey into this newly opened part of the MCU is Rachel McAdams, who plays Strange's co-worker and love interest Christine Palmer. Strong, devoted and a woman you don't want to piss off, I'm hoping we see more of her in upcoming films. While I loved her character, I think they didn't utilize her enough so here's to keeping our fingers crossed. Tilda Swinton was fantastic as Strange's mentor The Ancient One and I was very impressed on how devoted she was with portraying this beloved Marvel character. Benedict Wong's character Wong was hilarious and bad ass, so let's see more of him. Finally there's Mordo, played by actor Chiwetel Ejiofor. He's The Ancient One's right hand man and one incredible being. A gifted sorcerer, Mordo plays off Strange well and the two have great on-screen chemistry but things might not be alright with him.
As you can see, I'm trying not to reveal any spoilers if you have not seen this movie yet (and if not why the hell are you reading this?). But I will tell you that there are the standard two end credit scenes so no big surprise there. However, these two scenes also set up two major events that will be revealed in upcoming MCU films! So, heck yeah I'm super excited to see where all this goes!
While it's a superhero movie, it's all about the magical and mystical side of Marvel that most people do t even realize yet. With this movie, a new doorway has been opened and it leads to other worlds, other realms, other dimensions that have yet to reveal themselves. The MCU is about to become an even bigger world thanks in large part to not only Doctor Strang, but to Lee and Ditko for creating one of the most important characters in comic book history.
DOCTOR STRANGE in 3D is one of the best Marvel films that you will ever see on the big screen! With all of Marvel Studios films, you need to see it on the big screen! And yes definitely see it in 3D!! It will totally blow your mind wide open!! 5 out of 5 stars!! Highly recommended!!
DOCTOR STRANGE is currently playing in both 2D and 3D in theaters nationwide. The movie is also being shown at select IMAX theaters as well. Check your local listings to see if it's playing at a theater near you.

Welcome back to another edition of Phil Gets Tromatized where I'll be reviewing the films from Troma Entertainment's vast library. Today's film review is one of several films that Troma has released to feature a future Hollywood star. In one of her earliest starring roles, singer/model/actress Carmen Electra would go on to star in television shows and major Hollywood movies as well as grace the pages of Playboy Magazine. But before all the fame, fortune and notoriety, she starred in the Redsploitation Troma film THE CHOSEN ONE: LEGEND OF THE RAVEN directed by Lawrence Lanoff.
The film's official synopsis: Sexy superstar Carmen Electra (star of TV’s Baywatch and MTV’s Singled Out) explodes onto the screen in her feature film debut as McKenna Ray, THE CHOSEN ONE: the ultimate warrior in the battle between good and evil. When her sister Emma (Playboy Playmate Shauna Sand Lamas, star of TV’s hit series Renegade) is viciously murdered, McKenna, a cynical young lady, enters a world which she left long ago. Guided by her shaman father and Emma’s spirit, McKenna discovers that she holds the key within her to prevent the apocalypse. Carmen Electra is THE CHOSEN ONE, a powerful beautiful avenging force of purity who’s sole purpose is to defend the weak and destroy the wicked.

With this being her film debut, Electra did a great job and showed the world that she wasn't just another pretty face (which she still has and looks absolutely stunning). Her Indian ceremonial dance she did in the that outfit was so damn sexy. But there was one thing that did bother and that was she had a body double for her sex scene. This still baffles me to this day. She posed nude for Playboy for crying out loud but she had a double for the sex scene. The only logical conclusion I came up with was maybe she was nervous to do the scene with her male co-star Dave Oliver, who played Henry her love interest in the film. Posing nude and doing a sex scene in a movie are two totally different things I suppose, but I thought her acting was great.
Another Playboy Playmate to appear in the film was the former Shauna Sand Lamas, who at the time was married to Lorenzo Lamas, star of the hit television show Renegade. Sultry, sexy and her running in the forest in the beginning of the film is the stuff every teenage boy's fantasy, Sand's acting is as legendary as her breasts. Not saying she can't act because she can a little bit. But to be honest, she is eye candy in the film, but her wardrobe in the movie more than makes up for her acting abilities.
The last actress I wanted to mention was Debra Xavier, who portrayed Nora/The Wolf in the movie. Better known from the steamy television series Red Shoe Diaries, her performance was really good and let me just say, she can play crazy like no other. Oh, and look for the director in here as well playing Serial Killer Bob. He's just as psychotic as she is!
THE CHOSEN ONE: LEGEND OF THE RAVEN is another fine B-rated Troma classic that you have to see to believe! It's so bad it's good motto fits this movie like a glove, but it really is a decent little movie! And it's pretty hot and sexy as well! So go see this late 90's flick and have fun watching it! 3 1/2 out of 5 stars! Worth checking out!
THE CHOSEN ONE: LEGEND OF THE RAVEN is currently available on DVD at your local retailer. The film is also available at the Troma website. To purchase this film as well as books, posters and Blu-Rays and DVDs, visit www.troma.com.

Phil sees CRIMSON PEAK from Universal Pictures-February 20, 2016
Director Guillermo del Toro has made some of the most interesting, original and frightening films ever made. From his breakthrough debut of CRONOS to films like HELLBOY, PAN'S LABYRINTH and PACIFIC RIM, del Toro has crafted works of art that contains both surrealistic imagery and social commentary. His latest film CRIMSON PEAK is equal parts horrifying disturbing and atheistically pleasing visually.
The film's official synopsis: When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger named Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston), Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) is swept
away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with
secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness,
between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak.
Words cannot describe just how amazing and gorgeous this movie is. With its sweeping visuals, impressive sets, outstanding performers and terrifying script, the movie harkens back to the old Hammer Films of the past. And like those gothic classics, this film captures the look and sounds of the early 1900s perfectly: the impressive exterior sets, the dramatic costumes, the eirry English castle, everything is done to perfection. You don't see to many movies being made with this much attention to detail. Again, del Toro's directing is fantastic!
Along with co-writer Matthew Robbins, del Toro's script is utterly horrifyingly romantic and weaves together themes of love, murder, life and death. It's sheer brilliance is such a welcomed change of pace from your typical Hollywood cookie cutter films and the tired reboot/remake/sequel trend. The story itself is gripping; showing us a time and place that we immediately are drawn to. We the audience are transported into another world and we become so invested in not only the story, but the characters that inhabit this world.
CRIMSON PEAK is one of the most hauntingly beautiful romantic horror films I've seen in decades! Easily one of the most strikingly and original films as well! So do yourself a favor and see this astounding work of art!! 5 out of 5 stars!! Very highly recommended!!
CRIMSON PEAK is now available on Blu-Ray and DVD at your local retailer. It's also available on Redbox and Video On Demand.

The three main leads are phenomenal, each bringing something interesting to the table. Our protagonist Edith is wonderfully brought to life by Mia Wasikowska and she brings a wide variety of emotions. Edith is intelligent, a gifted writer, bold and has no problem with speaking mind, and yet at the same time she's naive, stubborn and vulnerable. A great performance by this talented actress. Tom Hiddleston breaks out of his Marvel alter ego Loki and shows us he has a lot more to offer to his fans. He adds a sense of intrigue, mystery and distrust to his character Thomas but there's a level of confusion. He knows what he has to do but he becomes town between his love for Edith and his loyalty to his sister Lucille, played amazingly twisted by Jessica Chastain. Lucille is both insanely breathtaking and gorgeously twisted which is very hard to pull off but Miss Chastain does this effortlessly. This actress was born to play this character!

Phil sees THE LAST WITCH HUNTER from Lionsgate-February 6, 2016
I've never been a big Vin Diesel fan. Granted people love the guy and yes, I guess he's kind of a sexy bad ass in the FAST AND THE FURIOUS series. But for the most part, he's just not a very good actor. There, I said it. I did like him as Groot in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY but, then again, he only had one line that he repeated throughout the film. And Groot was a computer generated character so he officially didn't appear in it. So when I saw his latest film THE LAST WITCH HUNTER, I found myself thinking that Vin Diesel should probably stop making movies all together and just do voiceover work.
The film's official synopsis: The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of
all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural
creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of
witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for
centuries, including Kaulder (Vin Diesel), a valiant warrior who managed to slay the
all-powerful Queen Witch (Julie Engelbrecht), decimating her followers in the process. In
the moments right before her death, the Queen curses Kaulder with her
own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and
daughter in the afterlife. Today Kaulder is the only one of his kind
remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the
while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to
Kaulder, the Queen Witch is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer
causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human
race.

Theatrical Movie Poster (2015) |
Wow, this was such a bad movie. I mean really, really bad. Really bad acting, really bad characters, a script that sounded like it was written by a sixth grader, everything was just bad. This is a film that I can see Michal J. Nelson, Kevin Murphey and Bill Corbett from RiffTrax making fun of (hint hint guys). I still can't understand how films like this get made. Who in their right mind would greenlight a project like this and think it'll do well at the boxoffice? C'mon Mr. Hollywood Big Shot Executive, you cannot be that naive! You should've known that this movie was going to suck ass! And yet you still went ahead and gave the "go ahead" and made this piece of crap. And it bombed hard at the boxoffice but you knew that was bound to happen. Vin Diesel plus good movies do not add up at all. So stop making crap and start making good movies please! Thank you!
Another factor I'm dumbfounded is why in the hell is Michael Caine in this movie. He is a talented and legendary actor whose made some amazing and powerful works of art. The man has apoerared in ZULU, ALFIE, BATTLE OF BRITAIN, THE ITALIAN JOB, THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING, A BRIDGE TOO FAR, DRESSED TO KILL, HANNAH AND HER SISTERS, THE CIDER HOUSE RULES, THE PRESTIGE, CHILDREN OF MEN and the DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY. He's one of the all-time greats and yet he appeared in this abomination of a film. Why Michael? You're better than this. Did you do it for the money? We're you just bored? Seriously I really want to know! Get back to me later on that buddy!
So in conclusion, THE LAST WITCH HUNTER is a total piece of shit that will make you feel dumber after watching it. The film doesn't even qualify for the, "It's so bad it's good" moniker. It's just bad. Don't even waste your time with this movie. You're better off watching paint dry because let me tell you that's more entertaining than watching this movie. 1 out of 5 stars!! Just say no!!
THE LAST WITCH HUNTER is still playing in select theaters and is also available on Blu-Ray and DVD at your local retailer. It's also available on Redbox and Video On Demand.

Phil sees THALE at Monsterpalooza-April 13, 2013
So during my trip to Monsterpalooza, the fine folks at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival were on hand to screen a couple of really outstanding and eclectic films. I had heard of both films and I was very excited to see them. The first movie of the night was THALE, an interesting Norwegian horror/fantasy film written and directed by Aleksander L. Nordaas.
Meet Leo and Elvis (Jon Sigve Skard and Erlend Nervold repectively). They run a crime scene cleaning business. When they are sent out to clean a crime scene where only half a body was found (which in itself is a bad sign), they discover in the basement a Thale, a mythical character in Nordic folklore called the "huldra." Leo and Elvis soon discover that the Thale has been captive there for a number of years and now someone (or something) wants her back.
The movie is an interesting hybrid, channeling both the fantasy aspect (the mythical Thale) and the horror (the mysterious creatures that want the Thale). Nordaas does an excellent job of creating beauty, mood, and tension within the film. The cinematography was excellent, capturing the beauty of the Norwegian countryside. As the movie progresses, we the audience become sympathetic to both Leo and Elvis, who were just doing their job and as well as with the mute Thale, who can only remember bits and pieces of her life before becoming a captive.
The budget of the film was so small that not only Nordass directed the picture, he was also the writer, producer, cinematographer, and editor! In fact, the basement where the film takes place is actually his father's basement! Now that is low budget filmmaking at its finest!
Both Jon Sigve Skard and Erlend Nervold are great and have perfect on-screen chemistry. However, hats off to the stunning Silje Reinåmo, who as Thale didn't have any lines, but was able to convey a wide array of emotions using just her eyes, hands, and body movement. And yes, she is naked throughout the film, but her acting is so mesmerizing I forgot that she was naked. Now that should tell you just how talented she is!
In the end THALE is an astounding, intriguing, and original film that captures the imagination and wonder of what the possibilities of what movies can be! The film appeals to both horror and fantasy fans who want something different. Truly an unique and visually captivating film! 4 out of 5 stars!! Recommended!!
THALE is currently available on Video On Demand as well as on both Blue-Ray and DVD. To purchase a copy, visit your local retailer or visit the Amazon website at www.amazon.com. To learn more about the Screamfest Film Festival, visit their website at www.screamfestla.com.

Phil hosts the Cult Movie screening of THE PRINCESS BRIDE at the Camera 3 Downtown San Jose, September 13, 2012
Hello my fellow cult fanatics and welcome to Month Eight of the Cult
Movie Series here at the Camera 3 in Downtown San Jose! So for
tonight's cult film we screened that beloved children/fantasy film THE PRINCESS BRIDE. Once again yours truly was the host for tonight's screening.
Prizes were donated
by Streetlight Records and by Time Tunnel Toys, both located here in San Jose. There were also yummy donuts to eat, courtesy of Psycho Donuts located in the lobby.
Based upon the 1973 novel of the same name by author William Goldman, the film was directed by Rob Reiner, who first became famous for portraying Michael 'Meathead' Stivic on the 70's television show All In The Family. In the early 80's he became famous for directing films such as THIS IS SPINAL TAP and STAND BY ME. In 1987, he formed Castle Rock Entertainment and directed such hits as WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, MISERY and the critically acclaimed A FEW GOOD MEN.
The film had a great ensemble cast! Peter Falk (Columbo) portrays a grandfather who visits his sick grandson, portrayed by Fred Savage, who was only ten years old when he made a film (A year later, Savage would go on to star on the hit TV show The Wonder Years). Cary Elwes (HOT SHOTS, ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS, SAW) portrays the hero in the film Westly, who must rescue the love of his life Buttercup (Robin Wright from FORREST GUMP, SHE'S SO LOVELY) from marrying the evil Prince Humperdink (Chris Sarandon from FRIGHT NIGHT, CHILD'S PLAY. He was married to Susan Sarandon from 1967-1979). Joining Westley on his mission are his friends: the enormous Fezzik (portrayed by the late, great wrestling legend Andre the Giant) and Spaniard swordsman Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) who wants revenge against the man who killed his father, Count Tyrone Rugen (Christopher Guest from THIS IS SPINAL TAP, WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, BEST IN SHOW, A MIGHTY WIND). Also appearing in the film are Wallace Shawn (Rex from the TOY STORY films), Peter Cook, Mel Smith, Carol Kane, and Billy Crystal.
The film was released by 20th Century Fox on September 25, 1987. It made $30.8 million at the boxoffice on a budget of $13 million. Not too shabby back then, however, the film wasn't the big hit like the studio was hoping for. So to them it was a commercial failure. But when it was released on VHS, the film finally found its audience, and soon became a cult classic.
What a great crowd we had! Over 60 people came out to see the film! Now there is still one more showing of THE PRINCESS BRIDE this Saturday, September 15th at midnight. Then next moth's cult film will be the Sam Raimi's 1988 film EVIL DEAD 2: DEAD BY DAWN on Thursday, October 18th at 9:30pm and again on Saturday, October 20th at midnight! So mark these days on your calender and come out and have some cult movie fun! To view the rest of the Cult Movie Series schedule, visit the Camera Cinemas website at www.cameracinemas.com.
